Greetings!

valentine dartWelcome to February's career newsletter!

"Matchmaker, matchmaker, make a me a match!"

As Valentine's Day approaches, images of hearts, flowers, and Cupid come to mind. I have always thought of Cupid as an extraordinary Talent Acquisition Manager. After all, just think of some of the "job requisitions"
that come across his desk! Are the position requirements realistic? I am reminded of the lyrics in Fiddler on the Roof's infamous song, Matchmaker.

"For Papa, make him a scholar... for Mama, make him rich as a king. For me, well, I wouldn't holler if he were as handsome as anything!"

Finding the right job is a matchmaking process. It has to be a good fit on both ends. When seeking a n
ew opportunity, it is important to know what's on your A-list, and have a clear understanding of what you are seeking. Do you like to work independently, or as part of a team? Are you best behind the scenes, or out in the field? Do you thrive in a small environment, or large? The list goes on and on. So, make that list, check it twice! (Oops, wrong holiday!) When you are ready to seek an employment match, analyze what you must have. What are your deal breakers? Then target your search accordingly.

If you are just starting out in your career, it is realistic to assume that you may have to "kiss a few frogs." Your first and second job may not be perfect. This is why doing your homework and trying to find companies that interest you is so important. If you can get in, prove yourself, and make the right connections, you will be closer to your goal.

Remember, it is much easier to meet the Prince/Princess if you are already in the castle.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Kind regards,

Get Off Your "Buts"

by Michelle A. Riklan, ACRW, CPRW, CEIC

According to a recent survey by CollegeGrad.com, entry-level jobs have increased by 22 percent from last year. That's the highest percentage in 3 years. So, if you are a recent college graduate and have given up on finding that entry-level job, it is time to get off your "buts."

  • But, there are no jobs.
  • But, I've sent my resume out EVERYWHERE.
  • But, I can't afford to live on my own.

To start, there are jobs. They may not be the "dream" job or the highest paying. Entry-level means just that. You will not be Vice President of Marketing until you have paid your dues. Get into a company that interests you and work your way up. Or, get into a job where you can make the right connections. At ANY level, it is much easier to find a job when you have a job.

If you are saying you have sent your resume out EVERYWHERE, then you do not have an understanding of how today's job search works. Only approximately 10% of available jobs are advertised. That leaves 90% of available jobs that require a different approach than scouring the job boards. Today's search is not only about finding a job, but putting yourself out there to be found. You need a strategic plan for both.

Lastly, a person is much more motivated to secure an income when they are responsible and accountable. If you have bills to pay, you will be motivated to pay them. Find a roommate or two, get out on your own and take responsibility for your rent, phone, electric, and cable bills. Responsibility is a great motivator!

Is Your LinkedIn Profile Holding You Back?
by Laura Smith Proulx

Laura Smith ProulxYou've probably heard that LinkedIn is a valuable job search tools that allows hiring managers to recruit you or learn about your skills. Yet, you may be confused about why your Profile doesn't attract this kind of attention from employers.

Here are 3 common LinkedIn missteps that can make the difference between having all the action pass you by - or realizing the full power of the site:

1 - Remaining invisible.

Watching from the sidelines while all those Status Updates, blog posts, and Group discussions scroll past? It's time to insert yourself into the action.

Not only can you use Status Updates to mention an event you're attending or book you're reading, you can issue miniature "press releases" that note new product introductions or other team achievements (assuming that these items aren't confidential).

Status updates can help inform others of what you do in your day-to-day work, plus help you promote specific accomplishments or personal accolades that would otherwise go unnoticed. And they last: Updates stay listed on your Profile when others find it, displayed like a personal news reel that continues to work for you 24X7.

Don't forget that you can comment on others' blog posts (or publish your own) on LinkedIn, plus use Status Updates to post a link to an online article. All these activities help to educate your network on your area of expertise.

LinkedIn Groups offer discussion boards that work in a similar fashion to Updates. You can post your thoughts on a relevant industry topic, or simply comment on others' discussions.

Didn't join enough Groups yet? Get going - LinkedIn allows you to join up to 50.

2 - Confusing recruiters by adding non-work information as experience.

LinkedIn files the data in your work history in reverse chronological order, meaning that your most current experience will be shown first.

If you added experience on a Board (or a consulting gig, or any venture that doesn't represent your work experience) in this section, readers of your Profile will see this activity first - listed as if it WERE your full-time job.

Besides confusing recruiters, showing this chronology can convince recruiters that you're either unemployed or grasping at straws to show your experience.

The fix? Move your Board roles all the way down under Additional Information, where there is a category called Associations.

If you feel you're burying this experience too deep, then mention the organization and your role in the Summary as well.

3 - Disclosing too much information.

Did you take LinkedIn's requests for data a bit too seriously? This is one of the most common LinkedIn mistakes made by job hunters.

If an item doesn't belong on your resume, don't add it to LinkedIn! This goes for dates of degrees (especially if earned in the 1980's or before), or positions held that you normally wouldn't show on a resume (because they were too short or are now outdated).

While date fields are used throughout the site for all kinds of career information, you can simply omit the years on everything from education programs to awards, certifications, and so on.

If you're unsure what should be included, remember that the last 15 years of your professional life will be of most relevance to employers... then edit your Profile accordingly.

In summary, LinkedIn won't magically produce results in your job search -unless you've taken steps to display your experience and cultivate a following. Be sure to review your Profile carefully for these mistakes - ensuring that you've put your best foot forward online.
