July Newsletter
July is a great month for cycling. The Tour de France starts on July 2nd and it is the ultimate event in road racing. I am always intrigued by the team strategies, the strength of the riders, and the endurance of everyone in the event. This is where the drama of cycling peaks. Some falter and crash while others excel and thrive. I can't wait to see what this year's race brings. We're having some viewing parties to celebrate - check out the events section for details.

This is also a great month for sales. We have a sale from July 15th to July 24th called "The Big Deal" and it is going to be a big deal. We already have fantastic savings on road bikes going on and starting the 15th we will be adding accessories from trunk bags to wheels to the sale. We hope you will find the perfect item for your cycling experience.

Ready to be inspired,

Anne

P.S. Do you have a great story you'd like to share or an experience? Tell me about it. Is there something you'd like to see in this newsletter that I missed? E-mail: anne@trekstorestpete.com.

Bike with sunsetDinner Cruise | First Friday of Every Month 6:30pm

We are having so much fun on the Dinner Cruises. On the first one we rode to The Burg Bar and Grill for burgers and beer. We watched James eat an enourmous burger sandwiched in between two grilled cheeses. He almost finished this huge burger, we were certainly rooting for him. We had a peaceful dinner overlooking Albert Whitted Airport at The Hangar Restaurant and Flight Lounge in June. July's event was rainy. We ate curry from Moon Under Water under an umbrella. We still had a great time and lots of laughs. Join us for the next one, August 5th! We are going to Johnny Reno's, a new place at the Pier that has fantastic reviews already. Bring your beach cruiser or whatever bike you like to cruise on, ride to dinner ...hang out. So simple and so much fun.

Wet Weather | Cleaning the Bike

You went out for a bike ride in the morning and despite the weatherman's predictions of sunshine and breezes, you got caught in the rain.....again. Even the best planned rides sometimes take a detour. You've cleaned off all the mud on you and thrown the shorts and jersey in the laundry....now for the bike. It's not as hard as you think to get it clean and well lubricated again.

When the sun comes out after a long day of riding in the rain, give your bike a little love and attention to keep it running smoothly. It takes less than half an hour to clean your bike up. For your efforts, you'll get to ride without any annoying squeaking or grinding noises.

Better yet, you'll extend the life of your bike. Grit from rainy weather will wear down the chain, gears, brakes and rims if not cleaned off.

Take a rag and slowly go over the bike from top to tail, removing as much grit and mud as you can. Any grit you leave on the bike will act as an abrasive against the different parts so this is important. Go over the frame, gears and derailleur, then wipe down the chain and the rims. Open the brakes and get the grit out from between the rims and the brake pads.

Next, return to the chain. Give it a vigorous rub with the rag to get as much grime off as possible. If you have an old toothbrush, you can use that to help clean between the links.

 GT 85

Apply lube to the chain once you're done cleaning it. If you're going to be riding a lot in rain, or on long-distance trips, a wet-weather lube is a good option. We use GT-85 (only 8.50 with this month's coupon - see below) most of the time and Finish Line Cleaner and Lubricant. Both are teflon based (PTFE) lubricants that won't cause anything to build-up on your chain.

A little lube in other places isn't a bad idea either. Start with your brake and gear cables. Even if they are covered in a plastic casing, cables can get stiff after wet riding so drop a bit of lube in and keep them sliding freely. Follow that up with some lube around points like the pivot point on the derailleur and any exposed springs on your clipless pedals.

With these basics covered, you should be ready to go. Any questions? Come by the Maintenance Class on July 27th at 5:30 for FREE!
