May Newsletter
This month has been a whirlwind at the Trek Store. Between the Bike n' Eat's successful launch, triathlons, and just the warm weather getting people out on their bikes - we have been busy! The best part is that we are meeting and helping people of all cycling capabilities and interests. From the child getting their first bike, to the teenager interested in tri's, from everyone trying to go out and get fit, to the competitive cyclist - we are enjoying getting to know you all. You buy bikes and accessories as gifts for all occasions and we love being a small part in your life. Thank you!

This month is National Bike Month and we are celebrating with our Go By Bike promotion, a whole month of sales and specials. Cycling is like every other hobby, if you have the right equipment, you get the most out of the ride, you enjoy it more, and you have more fun. Come by and see what accessories or bikes will help you and your cycling experience. As part of National Bike Month, we are encouraging you to get out and use your bike. Go by bike to work, the grocery store, or wherever your heart leads you. Help us celebrate the bicycle by using yours.

Out riding with you all,
Anne

P.S. Do you have a great story you'd like to share or an experience? Tell me about it. Is there something you'd like to see in this newsletter that I missed? E-mail: anne@trekstorestpete.com.

Rides and Event Updates....

NEW!! Coaches Ride | Wednesdays at 6 pm

This group training ride is guaranteed to be fun, challenging and allow you to learn from an experience and certified cycling coach.  But only if you're ready to roll right at 6pm.  So meet a few minutes early to pump, prep or re-up on ride supplies, like a spare tube, gel or favorite ride-ju-ju you just can't leave without...

What it is: A 28 - 32 mile group ride depending on wind conditions and the route chosen that day.  Coach Matt Erickson and Co-Ride-Leader Lila Methot take the group for a solid, 2 hour, tempo ride with proper warm-up before the group brings the tempo up to hold a 20 mph average speed for the ride.  Count on Matt and Lila to keep the group safe, fun and challenged with different skills drills, sprints and technique coaching throughout.

What you need
  • A bike in safe operating condition you can ride at or near 18 miles per hour for at least an hour
  • A good attitude geared to having fun and getting a good work-out
  • A flat-repair kit, water bottle
  • A small snack, energy bar etc.
  • A helmet
  • A map
Riders of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join-in.  Those less experienced and unsure of their ability to maintain at least 18 mph during the ride can grab a map of the route from the shop before heading out and will have a "sweeper" riding between 17 - 18 mph at the back of the group after the 15 minute warm-up.
For more information call the Trek St. Pete Store or Call Coach Erickson for more details.

The restaurant tour was attended by about 90 people and was a fantastic success.   We started at Tour De Pizza, continued on to The Hangar, Taco Bus, Grand Central Perc, and 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House. Health and Nutrition

When you're in the middle of an intense ride and a leg cramp occurs, it can completely derail your ride. Hydration and adequate stretching can help prevent these set backs in your workout. Read more here.

Stretching to prevent injury Hamstring stretch - When you ride your bike you never fully extend your leg, it is always slightly bent. After doing this activity for a while, your hamstrings lose their length and therefore their flexibility. Without properly stretching your hamstrings, you risk damaging those tight muscles. I know - I've done it.
1) Sit with one leg straight and the other leg bent, with your foot at the opposite knee.
2) With your back straight and your head up, slowly bend forward at the waist as if you were leading the move with your chest.
3) Hold for 30 seconds or 5 or 6 deep full breaths.
4) Try not to stretch to the point of pain - you are only hurting yourself. Hold the stretch where it will still feels good and you don't feel any burning in the muscle.

We Believe in Bikes
We believe in the bicycle as an answer to many of the world's problems: environment, health, economics, and the pursuit of happiness. We, at Trek, believe in the power of the bicycle period. This link is a great video illustrating our commitment to the bike.
