Happy New Year!
Almost every culture in the world celebrates the new year at this time. It is a time for starting fresh, creating new goals and evaluating the ones from last year. I always feel as if we really are all in this practice together. Everyone talks about their New Year's Resolutions. It is common to make unrealistic goals and promises to ourselves and have high expectations - I know, I have done it many times.
This year I am making simple goals: (1) Ride my bike, (2) Make people smile, (3) Keep my life balanced, and (4) Get outside more.
In the shop, we have some resolutions too: (1) Create rides, activities and classes that benefit you, (2) Help you achieve your resolutions, and (3) Be the best shop we can be.
We want you to be comfortable, have a great time, and then come back for more. Lila, Ted, Robin and I have come up with shop rides that are fun and let you learn how to ride in a group, classes to teach you about your bike and yoga to help take care of your body and mind off the bike. It is all free; we are here for you.
So no matter if your resolution is to get in shape, finish first in that race, or ride around the neighborhood more with the kids - we can help.
Thank you for the opportunity,
Anne, Lila, Ted, and Robin

A big thank you to you our customers, for making our first three months fantastic! We have enjoyed meeting every one of you and sharing in your hopes and goals.
We are adding several events to the calendar:
- We have three morning rides leaving from the shop:
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. These 20 - 25 mile rides start at 7 am and move at about 16 - 18 miles an hour. - Yoga for Cyclists has started on Monday evenings at 6:45 pm. This is a great way to stretch out those tight hips and shoulders that as cyclists we are famous for. The class is free and no one will ask you to put your foot behind your head. Bring a mat and a towel.
- In the month of March we will hold a Kid's Rodeo. Games and obstacle courses will be fun for the whole family. Learn safety rules and tips - great for kids.
- April 1st will be our first Dinner Cruise. Bring your beach cruiser, ride to one of our local restaurants ...hang out. So simple and so much fun. We are already excited about this ride.
Advocacy - working for the benefit of all bicycles.
One of our goals is to continually work towards creating better places for you to ride. We joined SWFBUD - an organization of bicycle dealers that believes in better places to ride too. It includes 12 other stores in the bay area who are all working towards our goal. Together we hope to bring you events, a voice in the community, and new places to ride.
We are working with the City to create a "Silent Streets" event in the Spring. By closing down streets in downtown, you can ride safely without worrying about the cars.
We are also planning a "St.Pete Bike and Eat" where everyone rides to each restaurant on the tour. (I can not wait for this event - I love to eat.) Bring whatever bike you want to ride...all bikes are great.
We are sponsoring the American Stage After Hours Series and working with them on "American Stage in the Park" where we will be the official sponsor for "Bike Night". There will be bicycle friendly parking - a great addition to an already amazing event. This year's play is "Rent", a Pulitzer Prize winner!
Meet the Staff - big smiles = big hearts
Rockin' Robin Perkins
Hi! I'm Robin - one of the newest members of the ABC/Trek Store of St. Petersburg team. I am SO happy and blessed to be a part of such a great group of people. Working with like-minded individuals in an amazing atmosphere - so much fun!
I moved to St. Pete 10 years ago (I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale). Being an avid athlete since I was probably able to walk, I can't remember not having a bicycle. I got into the triathlon world about 16 years ago riding my mountain bike with slick tires. After my brother-in-law got a road bike, I decided it was time to make the jump myself. Since then (and thanks to my crazy Mad Dogs friends), I have participated in multiple half ironman's and 1 full Ironman. Something I am most proud of.
I hope you noticed the word "participated". That's the way I like to do things - no racing involved! I'm all about having fun (not that those of you who do race are not!). My favorite week of the year now is riding my bike across Iowa at RAGBRAI with my Whiner Bicycle Club and 20,000 of my closest friends. Nothing to do but get on your bike and ride to the next party - I mean town!
I'm so looking forward to helping make St. Pete a bicycle friendly city. I hope that someday it will be like my first day of fall classes at UF - you couldn't find a "parking space" for your bike!
I look forward to seeing you all out on your bikes and in our store!!

Yoga for Cyclists
Mondays at 6:45 pm - This is not yoga for people who want to be able to put their foot behind their head. This is a yoga class for you and me (the inflexible people) the ones that want to be comfortable in our own bodies. As cyclists, our hip flexors, hamstrings, and glutes all get tight while riding. We need our core strength to hold us up on the bike. It's not a competition, it's part of learning how to recuperate from those rides. Bring a mat and a towel - it's FREE!
Urban Assault Ride January 26th at 6:45 pm - Urban Assault Ride. Bring your knobby tires and a little of that attitude to ride St. Petersburg with a different style. Lights are required. Every ride will finish at a different local pub. Put that Mountain Bike to work at last.
Morning Rides Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 7:00 am - Everyone is welcome on these a.m. rides. This ride is about 20 - 25 miles and keeps a pace at about 16 - 18 mph. Suit up!
Flat Class January 12th at 5:45 pm - Flat Class. Let our experts teach you how to change a flat. Bring your wheel and flat pack with you. You'll leave with experience under your belt.
Maintenance Class January 26th at 5:45 pm - Maintenance Class. Learn the basics of the maintenance on your bike - Give us a call! We're here for you.

Health and Fitness Chocolate Milk for Recovery I know what you're thinking..."You're kidding, right?" or maybe "That's too good to be true". But chocolate milk has a lot of the items you need to recover from your latest workout. Chocolate milk has more than double the carbohydrates and protein than sports drinks, re-hydrates you with it's high water content, and contains calcium, sodium and sugar (all items your body needs to get going again). So don't knock it - Try it!
Stretch Those Hip Flexors
Our hip flexors get tighter and tighter as we ride. The hip flexors are a group of muscles that bring the legs up toward the trunk. Cyclists often have tight hip flexors because the cycling motion never allows the thigh to fully extend. Keeping the hip flexors limber is essential to avoiding muscle imbalance and post-ride stiffness. - Begin in a forward lunge position and drop your back knee to the floor.
- Raise your arms and hands up over your head or keep your hands on your knee and look up.
- Press your hips forward and down toward the floor and feel a stretch through your torso, hip, groin and thigh.
- Hold the stretch for about 20-30 seconds while breathing deeply, release and repeat on the other leg.
Just for Fun I am always amazed at what people can do with a bicycle. In this link, the creator only re-emphasized that idea. I think it's a great way for people to experience the fact that we all rely on each other in this world, no matter how separated we feel. Check out his website.
