PRACTICE CORNER

Dotted rhythms and syncopations present accuracy challenges. An excellent technique to overcome difficulties is to subdivide the rhythm into a common divisible value and articulate the subdivision. For example: when playing dotted eighth-sixteenth note rhythms, articulate the dotted eighth as three sixteenths, the placement of the fourth sixteenth note becomes obvious. Practicing the subdivision then imagining the sound in your mind as you play will create an accurate sense of rhythm.

The Talent Code

Bursting common perception, The Talent Code explores and documents the process of developing "talent". Successful teachers have long understood that students with seemingly natural ability often fail, while students with organized and focused practice skills excel. Science has now documented the physiological processes that occur when a student dedicates themselves and practices in a deep and methodical manner.

Please take a moment to acquaint yourself with their website and consider reading the book.
