Dear Parents,

We hope you were able to enjoy some of the wonderful Belle View events last month with your children. Events such as Family Literacy Night, Bobcat Bingo, Geography Day, The Buddy Art Project, Dyke Marsh Celebration and Planting Day would not be possible without the continued support of our community. We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair and Family Movie Night this month.

As the holiday season approaches we would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, parents, students and community for the tremendous support we receive on a daily basis.

Thank you volunteers for the countless hours helping our children.

Thank you community members for supporting our school.

Thank you parents for providing such wonderful home support.

Thank you students for coming to school daily ready and eager to learn.

Lastly, thank you staff members for providing Belle View's students a world class education.

We wouldn't be the great school we are without you.

We wish you and your family a restful and relaxing winter break. Best wishes for the upcoming year.

Proud Principals of the Belle View Bobcats,

Sincerely,

Thomas Kuntz                               Eleanor Contreras

Introducing...

Laura Leftwich, Music Teacher

 leftwich

Happy is she with a song in her heart....

  • Are you from the Alexandria area?

No, I am from the Fairfax area, about 10 minutes away from George Mason University' Fairfax Campus.

  • Do you have family here or pets?

I do have family here. My entire immediate family, actually: Mom, Dad, a brother named Drew who is 33 and a sister named Mary Claire who is 30. I am the baby of the family :). No pets, unfortunately. If I could have a pet, I would love to have a cat.

  • What made you want to be a music teacher?

I always loved music class growing up, and I always loved helping people, so I thought that teaching music would be a great job for me!

  • What do you like most about your career?

I like how I get to know a little about every grade level in the school, kindergarten through sixth grade.

  • Do you have any hobbies?

I really enjoy working out at the gym or at home.  I love taking walks. Being physically fit is important to me. I love to read. My favorite magazine is Real Simple and my favorite book is The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

  • Is there one thing you would like the students of Belle view to know about in regard to music Education?

Music should be fun! Don't worry if you don't feel like you are the best singer or recorder player. Just come in to music class with a positive attitude and try your best. Never be afraid of making a mistake. That's how we learn!

The Book Fair is Here!!!!

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills
children learn, it is the one you can influence the most.  We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of  reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission:  encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.

Our Scholastic Book Fair theme - To the Book Fair and Beyond! - is part of an out-of-this-world reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they'll get.

Your children will preview the Book Fair on Monday, Dec. 5. They will bring home a Book Wish List-these are books they are interested in. Please take a look at the list and you can decide what books you would like your child to purchase or not. Also, consider coming one of the two nights the Book Fair is open and shop with your child. The teachers will also make their own Wish Lists-this is a great way to support your child's classroom by purchasing books they will use throughout the year. These also make great Holiday gifts.

The Book Fair is open December 5-Dec 9. Monday 9:15 - 1:30, Tuesday-Friday 8:45-4:00 and Tuesday and Friday 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 will be a special Family Reading Night with the Book Fair open and Friday, Dec. 9 will be Movie Night (provided by the SCA) and the Book Fair will be open from 6:00 -8:00 pm also.

Club 24

Where Playing the 24® Game is sheer genius!

Club 24will be held on Tuesday mornings each week from 8:30 - 8:55a.m. beginning January 10.  Space is limited to 36 Belle View students in grades 3-6.

Students in grades 3-6 are invited to play The 24® Game, a mathematics enrichment activity which engages students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers.   The goal of the 24® Game is, through individual and team play and competition, to make math appealing, accessible and fun.

In 24®, students already know the answer. They just have to come up with the equation which, according to Game inventor Robert Sun, "puts the emphasis on the process and patterns... the method behind the math." The game builds on itself as children's knowledge of basic facts improves, starting with addition and subtraction, then on to single and double digit multiplication and division, through fractions/decimals, and integers, and algebra/exponents.

In order for your child to participate, a permission form must be submitted. As space is limited, registration will be on a first come - first served basis. Please consider your child's personal interest in participating in this program. Active engagement and participation in game mornings is essential for the success not only of your child, but also for his/her teammates.

More information about the 24® Game is available at the game website: www.24game.com.

For questions regarding this program, please call Talley Fulghum at 703.768.8232.
