Dear Belle View Parents,

By the time you read this, the fifth grade students will have finished the writing portion of the Standards of Learning.  Grades 3-6 SOL testing will occur during the months of May and June (May 16th - June 3rd).  To assist with the testing schedule, we ask that you try to avoid taking your children out of school during their assigned testing days.

Please help spread the news to our community members that on April  7, 2011 there will be an orientation for parents/guardians of children who will enter kindergarten in September 2011.  The orientation will be held in the library at 9:30 a.m.  At this meeting, parents/guardians will receive packets containing all the necessary papers for enrolling their child.  An overview of the Kindergarten program will be given along with general information about Belle View Elementary.

Lastly, we need your help to make the most of your child's time in school.  School starts promptly at 9:00 a.m.  Please be sure your child arrives on time and ready for school.

Field Trip to the Fairfax Recycling Center

On Wednesday, February 16th, Mrs. McCarl's second grade class went on a Field Trip to the Fairfax County Recycling Center.  On this trip, the students were given a behind the scenes look at how the county sorts and recycles our refuse

 and recyclable materials.

Below in our student showcase you will see two writings from students in Mrs. McCarl's class detailing the field trip.

 pennies for peace

You will be excited to know that on the 100th Day of School our students collected $376.57 for the

Pennies for

Peace Organization.

A special thank you to Quinn Byrnes for coordinating this event and helping to promote a global perspective in our children.

Who's Who at Belle View

Kerry Kaminski

1.       How long have you been at Belle View?

I moved to Alexandria last summer, and this is my first year at Belle View

2.       Where did you go to college and what specifically did you study?

I attended Georgetown University.  They didn't have an education major so I studied Sociology     and English.

3.       What can you tell us about your family?

I have a son named Finn, who is a kindergartner here at Belle View, in Ms. Langley's class.  My husband, Brian, works in public relations downtown.

4.       Are you from Northern VA?

I am!  I grew up in Centreville and graduated from Centreville High School.

5.       What is the best thing about teaching at Belle View?

I love how much time and thought goes into each child.  As a parent, I am so grateful that my son gets that kind of attention.  As a teacher, I am inspired by how much consideration my co-teachers show when thinking about how each student learns best and what techniques might help them grasp a new concept.

 6.          Do you have any pets?

No, but Finn is campaigning hard for a dog.

 7.       Do you have any hobbies?

I love to make stationary, and I love to read.  Finn and I like to do arts and crafts and my husband and I like to walk together.

 8.      Do you like to read?  What do you read in your free time?

I love to read, usually fiction.

 9.     What made you want to be a teacher?

Whenever I volunteered in high school and college, it was always working with children.  After I graduated from college, I went right to graduate school to work in Human Resources, and then I became a recruiter for Morgan Stanley in Manhattan.  I enjoyed my work, but I missed working with children very much.  I decided to switch careers eight years ago, and I am so glad that I did.  I can't imagine not being a teacher.  I love working with kids.

 10.   What is your favorite part about your job?

My students make me laugh every day.  I also love co-teaching and learning from other teachers-it helps me be a better teacher.

Spell Check Pledge

Recently your child received a Spell Check Pledge handout for our ongoing fundraiser to support the construction of a quarter-mile track at our school.  This paved running track is in the design phase of construction.

The full participation of all of our students will help in the effort to make this a track that will last for years to come.

During the pledge drive, children can ask their family and friends to sponsor them in a spelling challenge.  Donations will be made for correct number of words spelled correctly.

This activity is not only going to enrich the physical environment of our school, but is a great opportunity for your child to increase his or her spelling skills and knowledge.
