16 Pieces of Art to Come Downtown!
The BDC recently purchased 10 pieces of outdoor sculpture for permanent display through the 2012 Willow Walk outdoor art festival. Donations to the BDC's Catch the Spirit Campaign, and Friends of Downtown Burlington program made the sculpture purchases possible. In the coming weeks a newly formed Public Art Steering committee will meet to begin plans for placement of each piece.
These new pieces will join six other sculptures designated by the Alamance County Arts Council for downtown. Three of these, including the egg sculpture currently at Alamance Crossing, were purchased at the 2010 Willow Walk exhibition. The remaining three pieces are on temporary loan from the artists.
Many thanks go to the ACAC for their role in facilitating this new public art program for downtown!

The Paramount Acting Company Presents
The Hermit of Fort Fisher Paramount Theater June 21th - 24th
This newly written play by David Anthony Wright will surely be one not to miss. Read below for a synopsis about one of North Carolina's most intriguing historical characters:
"THE HERMIT OF FT. FISHER is based on the true-life story of Robert Harrell. In 1955, at the age of 62, after a life of abject failure, he left his home in Shelby, NC and moved to the marsh flats around Ft. Fisher on the NC coast. He took up residence in the abandoned shell of a World War II ammunition bunker, without electricity, plumbing or running water, and survived off the bounty of the ocean and "the kindness of strangers." He lived there for 17 years, battling heat, cold, hurricanes, mosquitoes, local/county/state government and law enforcement, common criminals, land developers, the US Army and his own demons. In the process, Harrell became the second biggest tourist attraction on the NC coast, after the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. His mysterious death in 1972 is the source of sorrow, anger and controversy to this day."
Tickets can be purchased at the Paramount Theater Box Office Monday - Friday from noon - 3pm for $10 or by calling 222-8497.
