3Rs Lesson Five Teaching Tips

Please review the full email for important 3Rs information!

Dear 3Rs Volunteer:

This Friday, Feb. 10, is the regularly scheduled 3Rs Lesson Five classroom visit. The student worksheets for Lesson Five (Equal Protection) are now available at the CMBA offices. We ask that captains or team representatives please stop by for pickup before this Friday's lesson, unless alternative arrangements have been made.

OGT Study Guide: Included with this month's student worksheets is an Ohio Graduation Test Quick Study Guide. Please encourage the students to use this guide to help them prepare for the test in March. To view a copy of the guide, click here.

Cleveland high schools are beginning to organize for the Cleveland Mock Trial Competition - 2012 Court Centennial Edition, and lawyers and law students are invited to take part as team legal advisors.  The Cleveland Mock Trial Competition will take place this year at the Cleveland Municipal Court on Friday, April 27, 2012.  Team legal advisors are needed to help students understand the case facts and applicable law, the roles of the attorney and witnesses at trial, and courtroom procedures and decorum. This year's case involves the criminal prosecution of an Iraq War veteran for offenses allegedly committed during an Occupy Cleveland protest. For more information, please contact Jessica Paine, Competition Coordinator, by calling (216) 696-3525 x4462 or emailing jpaine@clemetrobar.org

School closings: We encourage you to check with the schools the day of your 3Rs class in case inclement weather has forced the school to close.  Phone numbers for the schools may be found here.   To check for closings online, click here.  If you discover your school has been closed on Friday, please notify your captain and teammates.  Please also alert Jessica Paine at (216) 696-3525 x4462.  3Rs lessons cancelled due to school closings may be rescheduled according to your teacher and teammates' preferences.

3Rs lessons online: Videos of full 3Rs lessons have been posted on the 3Rs page online (click here).  The video for Lesson Five - Equal Protection features spotlights Congressman Louis Stokes as well as 3Rs volunteer, curriculum co-author and former social studies teacher Carter Strang teaching this month's lesson. These videos may be used as additional resources for volunteers and students pre- and post-lessons. Alternately, volunteers who choose to do so and have time may bring laptops with them to class to share parts or all of the videos with the students. Students should be encouraged to view the videos at home or at the library.

Team feedback: Your feedback is vital to the program. Team captains: please let us know about your experience during the first and second visits, especially names of teammates whom you were unable to contact and any issues that need to be resolved before Friday's lesson.

Questions, concerns, feedback: Please contact us by email or telephone - Jessica Paine at jpaine@clemetrobar.org or (216) 696-3525 x4462.

Thank you again for your commitment to the students!
