Design Concepts For The District's Near West Side |
Intersection of 1st and Stewart Ave. Rendering by Joe Lawniczak
|
Since June of last year, Main Street Wausau and Near West Side stakeholders have gathered on several occasions to discuss opportunities and priorities for the area's enhancement. To translate these discussions into a visual format, our Design Committee worked with Joe Lawniczak, Design Specialist with the Wisconsin Main Street program to develop renderings of the Clark Street cul-de-sac area. His work resulted in six renderings that present a cohesive design concept for the immediate area that address stakeholder priorities such as enhanced streetscaping, a focal point for the area, and the incorporation of art forms such as murals.
On March 1st, we hosted an Open House at Associated Bank for stakeholders to view, discuss, and provide feedback on the conceptual drawings. Stakeholders particularly appreciated the way the renderings create a unified sense of place within the District through the use of visual and physical elements that tie the area together. These elements include a consistent streetscape design and enhanced pedestrian crosswalks and accommodations.

Wausau Area Events, Inc. Wins State Award For Exhibitour
On Friday, April 20, 2012, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation recognized Wausau Area Events for its production of Exhibitour; named "Best Downtown Special Event" at the 22nd Annual Wisconsin Main Street Awards! Exhibitour, a popular art and wine walk, was recognized for its popularity, growth and economic impact on the Wausau area in an award category that recognizes excellence in a single, downtown special event.
Exhibitour is coordinated by the Wausau Area Events Exhibitour Committee and is made possible with the hard work of more than 20 downtown business owners who transform their storefronts into temporary art galleries for one evening each spring.
This year, Exhibitour was held on Friday, May 18. The event featured 23 host galleries and the work of more than two-dozen local artists. According to coordinators, the event drew record numbers of event-goers to the River District this year. It was estimated that more than 2,000 guests strolled from storefront to storefront to take in a variety of artwork, meet featured artists, and enjoy samples of wine and hors d'oeuvres.
We congratulate and thank Wausau Area Events and all participating downtown businesses on receiving the Wisconsin Main Street title of "Best Downtown Special Event" for Exhibitour!
