Promoting Downtown Wausau's River District
____________________________________
Main Street Wausau's Promotion Committee is dedicated to establishing and reinforcing a strong, positive image of downtown Wausau's River District as a destination for commerce, culture and community life that is "upstream from the ordinary". Whether or not the name 'Promotion Committee' sounds familiar, you'll likely recognize the products of this team's work. Retour Don't Detour was a short term initiative that used a series of signage throughout the District to inform community members and visitors that businesses remained open and accessible during 3rd Street's reconstruction.
This year, we invested a majority of our Holiday Advertising budget in a TV ad that promotes the unique, relaxed holiday shopping and dining environment our community offers. This 30 second ad ran regularly in the Wausau area. If you didn't catch the ad on TV, you can find it on our facebook page. Other holiday initiatives included the distribution of holiday marketing tips to retail and restaurant establishments and the coordination of the 4th Annual Holiday Window Decorating Contest and a Holiday Open House.
In November, the Promotion Committee launched "What's Up In The River District?", a weekly listing of specials and events happening in the District that is distributed electronically. This tool provides a one-stop-shop for downtown patrons to find information on anything from gallery galas to special sales happening that week.

We also coordinated a group of business owners that developed some new twists to the traditional Sidewalk Sales. The twists included making it possible for any business to participate in the Sales by relocating their wares to the First American Center Plaza and by integrating chalk art into the Sales.
While planning and coordinating the programs above, the Committee has been hard at work developing new initiatives coming in 2011. For starters, we're involved in redeveloping the District's website to more effectively and enticingly promote our downtown community. We're also working on expanding the frequency and reach of our on-going promotion of the District. In the next few months, we will also be rolling out a calendar of District-wide co-operative promotional opportunities. Whether it's scarecrows in the fall or lit luminaries in the winter, we're developing promotional tie-ins that businesses can implement collaboratively to ensure our community is well-staged to provide an evolving, unique environment for all to enjoy.
