Team Spotlight:
I entered the office equipment business due to a high level of encouragement and motivation from a very wise man...my father. He told me that I was wasting my time and intelligence by sleeping through most of the day and delivering pizzas at night. The motivation came from his strong suggestion either to enroll in some classes to start a new career or for him to introduce me to a few recruiters to enroll in something else. He suggested either to join the Air Force or to work in the field of computers because he had heard it was a growing business segment. I have great respect for our armed forces, but I chose to work on a degree in electronics at a local technology school.
I started classes in the fall of 1985, and soon started as an intern at a company called Harris/3M (now Lanier, a division of Ricoh). My job was setting up new copiers and repairing older ones. I started my first full-time job with Konica (now Konica Minolta) in 1986. Although I was excited to be working in the industry, I honestly wasn't feeling that working on copiers was what I wanted to do long term. My first manager gave me some great early advice; he said to be patient because the technology in the copier business changes very quickly. He knew I wanted to do something more directly related to computers. He went on to say that one day soon, copiers would become a vital part of the office's computer network. Of course, he was correct on all accounts, and the constant evolution of technology is to this day my favorite part of what we do. The constant change and variety of technology choices also make our most important task to find the right fit for each of our customer's unique business needs. I went on to work for a Konica branch office until joining Plus Inc. in March of 1997.
When I'm not working, I enjoy a strange form of exercise where I chase a little white ball around and hit it with a stick. Some folks call this the game of golf. I also play a little baseball when I have the chance, most recently old-fashioned baseball with our service manager, Danny Summers, and many other Shoeless Joe enthusiasts. Whereas this form of baseball is a lot of fun, I recommend playing by the newer rules which allow wearing a baseball glove. At home, I have three lovely women that keep me grounded and test my sanity on a daily basis. My two daughters have become wonderful young ladies that make me a very proud daddy. Niki, my oldest, is working on a Master's Degree in Psychology, and Marisa has ambitions to be a school teacher.
Wow, I blinked and now over 25 years in the business have passed, and I am celebrating 15 years this month with Plus Inc.! Now that I think about it, I could have retired from the Air Force after 20 years. No regrets...I made a great choice!
