Aloha!
One of the things I have come to learn over time is that if you want to increase your Bible knowledge, you simply have to make time to read the Bible in your daily life. No one else is going to do this for you, and ultimately you have to welcome the responsibility yourself. Of course, you can always participate in a Bible Study, but in the end, such a study is not an escape for doing your own daily reading. Learning the Bible simply takes discipline and the willingness to do the hard work. I know from my own experience that if there is a part of the Bible I do not understand or know, it is simply because I have not taken the initiative to study that part of the scriptures. I can blame no one but myself.
Lent is a perfect time to initiate or invigorate your study of the Bible. Last week the Bishop asked the diocese to join him in reading the Bible within a year. This is a great idea, and you can read the Bible in a year by clicking here. (For only those who do not have internet access, we have placed copies of this year long program in the back of the church.)
I often wonder how people can understand the scriptures on Sunday morning without having studied the Bible first. Even with my seminary education, I find that I have to study the Sunday morning readings before going to worship. I simply cannot understand the Bible without doing my own homework first. When you study the scriptures regularly, you can truly hear the Word of God on Sundays in a way that edifies life.
I often hear people say, "my Bible knowledge is poor." If I may rant a little, it is time to give up this mantra for the enjoyment of opening up the scriptures.
Blessings to you and your loved ones this Lent,
Father Paul+

The Catechumenate: Preparing for Easter
The First Sunday in LentSunday, February 2610:00 am High MassIt is a tradition that on the First Sunday in Lent, the catechumens are enrolled for the rites of the Easter Season. Following the sermon at the 10:00 am High Mass, the catechumens and their sponsors will be invited forward for the rite of enrollment. Then for the season of Lent, the catechumens and sponsors enter into the most intentional time of preparation for the rites of the Easter season. Those who wish to be baptized will be baptized at the Easter Vigil at St. Mark's on Saturday, April 7 at 6:30 pm. This liturgy is the traditional service for baptisms in the church. Those who are seeking to be received into the Episcopal Church, as well as those seeking confirmation, will participate in a special diocesan mass at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 20 at 4:00 pm. The Catechumenate meets on Sundays at approximately 11:30 am, following High Mass once everyone has a chance to enjoy post mass refreshments. All are welcome. Calling all Cooks!
On Tuesday, March 6, St. Mark's will be preparing meals for two different programs. The first program is Cohort U. Every Tuesday night Episcopal college students and their friends gather for food and fellowship at the University of Hawai'i. On the first Tuesday of each month, St. Mark's has volunteered to provide the dinner for about 10 students. The second program is Family Promise. Four times a year, the Church of the Crossroads partners with Family Promise to house local families who are in need. St. Mark's has joined this effort, providing meals for the families. Would you be willing to join us in preparing these dinners? There is a signup sheet on the back table of the church. If you do not have time to cook, money donations are welcomed to cover the cost of the food. Please kokua and help us reach out to our Episcopal campus students, as well as local families who are in need. Mahalo in advance. MORE ABOUT THE QUEEN EMMA OUTREACH GUILD

Remembering Father Turnbull
As mentioned in previous Evangel E-Newsletters, we are currently having the church bell repaired and refurbished. We have not been able to use the bell for quite some time now, and we are excited that soon we will be able to ring the bell. This work has been made possible due to generous donations by the children of the late Father Joseph Turnbull. Many of you have fond memories of Father Turnbull, and you have asked if you might also contribute to the cost of refurbishing the bell. To donate, simply write a check to St. Mark's, writing "church bell" on the memo line. Your donation will help us celebrate the legacy of a faithful priest, who was not only an important priest in the past for our church, but who also helped form us for our ministry and presence today. --from the Rector
