Aloha!

Did you know the following?

We have a new gardener at St. Mark's.  His name is Jeremy and he comes every Saturday and works on our gardens. He comes to us with much expertise. He has only been with us for a short while, and already I am extremely happy with the work he is doing. He has some excellent ideas, and in the future we hope to schedule work days when he can show us how to do some projects that will beautify our property even more.

Did you also know that we recently had to rerun the electrical wires in the ceiling of the rectory? When we moved into the rectory, we discovered that rats had entered into the space between the ceiling and the roof. We managed to get rid of the rats, but unfortunately the rats had been busy chewing on the wires. Thanks to an anonymous donation to St. Mark's, we recently fixed this problem, and now all is safe and secure with the rectory's electrical wiring.

Did you know that the bell at St. Mark's is about to be taken down, refurbished, and re-installed? Shortly after Father Turnbull died, we approached his children, Mary and Joseph, about how we might memorialize their father at St. Mark's.  They asked about the bell, and I informed them that the bell needed to be refurbished.  They have generously donated money for this project, and the Vestry has found the remaining funds.  It will cost a total of $8,000 to have this work done.  If you would like to contribute to this project in memory of Father Turnbull, please speak with me or our treasurer, Suzanne Kagawa.  Some of you have told me how you fondly remember watching Father Turnbull ring the bell before mass.  Before long, we will hear the bell again.

Are you wondering about the space at the back of the church by the main entryway?  We used to have a whole bunch of potted plants along that wall of stained glass crosses.  That flower bed, from which no plants seemed to survive, has been filled in and covered. Another anonymous donor has given money, and cushions are currently being custom made for that space, which will create a nice little bench along that wall.  No longer do folks have to rotate plants, from inside to outside and from outside to inside, every Sunday morning after low mass due to the lack of light that space receives.

So often St. Mark's benefits from all sorts of people giving of their time, talent and treasure quietly and in the background.  There are many other examples I could mention, but for now let me simply say, we are very blessed as a parish, and for that I give continual thanks.

Blessings to you and your loved ones,

Father Paul+

Ash Wednesday & the Lenten Fast
Lady Chapel Cross
Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sanctify a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
gather the people.
Sanctify the congregation;
assemble the aged;
gather the children,
even infants at the breast.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her canopy.
Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests,
the ministers of the LORD, weep.
Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD,
and do not make your heritage a mockery,
a byword among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
`Where is their God?'"
--From the Prophecy of Joel

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 22 and concludes with the Great Feast of Easter on April 8. Mark your calendars now for Ash Wednesday, Stations of the Cross on Lenten Fridays, and our Sunday Morning Lenten Study.

Information about these and other Lenten activities can be found on our LENTEN WEBPAGE.

Reaching Out & Helping Others

The Queen Emma Outreach Guild of St. Mark's meets monthly to discern ways the parish might help those within our church as well as those beyond our parish community. The following is a short synopsis of some of the guild's active ministry among us.

December was an especially busy month for members of St. Mark's Queen Emma Outreach Guild. On December 3, a mass commemorating World Aids Day was celebrated. We had many visitors from the community, and the choir sang for this mass. It included the Laying on of Hands for Healing and Anointing, and Father Lillie gave a homily about how all of our world and society needs healing due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A champagne reception was held after the mass with red velvet cupcakes, and all in attendance were given a red ribbon to wear.  The offering was designated for agencies that work to fight HIV/AIDS.

The Giving Tree, which featured items for children in the Holy Land, was set up by December 4. The response was great and generous; a total of $850 was collected for the various items requested.  This money has been sent to our Episcopal school in Ramallah via the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. Ramallah is a community just outside of Jerusalem, and the school was one of the places our pilgrims to the Holy Land visited this past Christmas.

The St. Nicholas Pageant, with Father Lillie portraying St. Nicholas, was held on December 18 between the morning masses.  The story of St. Nicholas was told, the congregation sangs songs, and the children were given bags of gold coins.  St. Nicholas reminded us about the greatest gift of all at Christmas--our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our continuing projects, Family Promise and Cohort U, were also serviced in December. Family Promise, a program to help homeless families transition into regular housing, is hosted by volunteer churches. Church of the Crossroads provides shelter and meals every three months and St. Mark's helps by preparing two dinners and serving as dinner hosts.

Cohort U is a diocesan program for university students. To help this new program grow, St. Mark's, along with three other churches in the university area, provide a meal once a week at our campus ministry center (the former Canterbury House) where students gather.

We continue to find new ways to help people in our community. We hope to participate in the AIDS Walk later this year, and we continue to find ways to help St. Mark's be more "green."  New member are always welcome on the guild; for more information speak with Theo Matsumoto, Louie Xigogianis, Suzanne Kagawa, Keiko Sanders, Marvin Mero, Tony Mullen, or Barbara Maeshiro. Most importantly, mahalo for your support!

 St. Mark's Episcopal Church is an inclusive church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
We are dedicated to sharing the good news of God in Christ through our celebration of the Sacraments, Liturgy, and Music, and by attending in Jesus' Name, to the needs of our members and the wider community.
We are a welcoming ohana, cherishing our catholic and Hawaiian mission roots, and we rejoice in our diversity.
