Aloha!
There is an old saying that there is nothing new under the sun. In other words, everything that happens has happened once before, and it will most definitely happen again. Last week at our catechumenate session we were discussing the origin of our Eucharist, and how the mass is rooted in the ritual meals of the Jewish people of Jesus' time. Once we had gone over the history, we spent some time discussing the abuses of the Eucharist in the early church, mostly articulated by St. Paul in his epistles. (Those Corinthians were something else!) It was a good reminder that every church in every age has challenges to face, and from that discussion we spoke about some of the dilemmas that revolve around the Eucharist today in our own churches.
This coming Sunday we continue to study the Eucharist in our catechumenate session. We will actually dissect together one of the Eucharistic Prayers of the BCP, most probably Prayer A from Rite II, labeling parts with words like "epiclesis" and "anamnesis." If you want to know what those words mean, you just have to come and join the catechumens this Sunday. Once we have chopped up Prayer A, we will break into groups and apply our knowledge to some of the other prayers.
For those who have gone through these exercises, the text of the Eucharistic Prayers speak in new ways during the mass. What was difficult to understand, or what only seemed like a long prayer said by the priest, begins to have meaning for one's faith. Believers discover a new dimension to the texts.
We have a good group of catechumens this year, just like last year, and it is not too late to join the process. The amount of knowledge acquired in the catechetical process is large, but not overwhelming, and the good news is that it is information that really never changes. There is nothing new under the sun - only the faith of Christ enduring throughout the ages which all of us need to rediscover on a regular basis.
Blessings to you and your loved ones, Paul+

Candlemas: The Presentation of Our Lord Thursday, February 2
Candle Ceremonies & High Mass with Choir, 6:30 pm
THE COLLECT FOR THE PRESENTATION Almighty and everliving God,
we humbly pray that,
as your only-begotten Son
was this day presented in the temple,
so we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
On this fortieth day after Christmas, we celebrate Mary and Joseph bringing the Christ Child to the Temple in Jerusalem. It was there that Jesus was greeted by Simeon and Anna. At High Mass, candles will be blessed, from which two candles will be used for the Blessing of Throats on the following Sunday.
