The Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
|
|
Aloha!
This Christmas Day a group of pilgrims from St. Mark's will depart for the Holy Land. We will spend two weeks in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Galilee, and other locales learning about the life of Christ. Father Jackson from Epiphany will also be going with his family, as well as a few other folks from other parts of the Episcopal Church. In all we have twenty pilgrims, many from St. Mark's.
In the Holy Land, the majority of the Christians are Eastern Orthodox, and they have their great holiday celebrations on the Epiphany, January 6. Our group will actually attend worship at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem when the local community celebrates the Christmas feast. When I lived in Jerusalem, this was one of the great highlights of the year, and I will always remember fondly how the Eastern Orthodox clergy invited us Anglican clergy to come and be a part of their procession throughout the church.
During our two weeks we will also walk the way of the cross, we will visit the church that commemorates the death and resurrection of Christ, and we will visit the Sea of Galilee, among a whole host of other activities and events. Most importantly, we will meet people of different faith traditions, and we will try to understand the conflict that continues age after age in the Holy Land. And of course, we will enjoy the local food.
Many people have said that you cannot visit the Holy Land just once. Once you have visited Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the holy places keep calling you back. For me this has been true. I knew, in a very certain way, that I would be returning to the Holy Land some day. If you would like to go some day, but could not go this time, do not worry. There will probably be more opportunities in the future for you to make your pilgrimage.
Blessings,
Father Paul Lillie +
Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Honolulu

Giving Tree for the Holy Land
Ends December 18
The Giving Tree for the Holy Land is on the front door of the church. Parishioners may choose from a wide variety of ornaments. Each ornament has a gift listed for a child in the Holy Land with the appropriate monetary amount. We ask that the ornaments be returned with the monetary amount by December 18. The total amount will then be given to the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, benefiting children in the Holy Land.
