Aloha!
This coming weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Sovereigns, and I hope everyone can join us for the parish potluck feast at 8:30 am on Sunday morning. No special program is planned except that we enjoy good food and good fellowship with each other. We will be serenaded with Hawaiian music from one of our parishioners, and the ukuleles from the Saturday afternoon Hawaiian music workshop may even lead us in a few songs.
I have always felt that church should be a place where people gather to share life festively. Even when tragedy happens, we gather to celebrate the life that Christ gives us freely; we keep proclaiming our hope. As we gather this weekend to give honor to our Holy Sovereigns who brought the Church to these Islands, let us give thanks for this communion that continues among the people of God.
See you this Sunday,
Father Paul Lillie +
Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Honolulu

The Feast of the Holy Sovereigns
STEWARDSHIP INGATHERING @ ALL MASSES
SATURDAY & SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19 & 20
On this weekend we celebrate Christ the King Sunday and the Feast of our Holy Sovereigns, especially Queen Emma our minor patron saint. Queen Emma was certainly a joyful offering for the people of our Islands, and on this special day, we invite everyone to offer their pledge commitment for 2012. We are asking everyone to come and place their pledge card in the offering at one of our masses this weekend.
PARISH FEAST
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20 at 8:30 am
Between the Sunday morning masses, we will gather as a parish 'ohana for a potluck with Hawaiian music at 8:30 am. Come join the fun, and get to know some of our other members who attend a different mass! Everyone is being asked to bring a dish to share, and the Vestry will provide the main dish - taco rice!!! You will have to come to the potluck to discover what taco rice is. It is delicious.
We also hope all of the children will attend the feast at 8:30 am. Once they have had breakfast, Jenny Wallace and Michel Reavis will tell the story of "How the Church Tells Time" (a lesson about the seasons of the church year) in the Godly Play Room.

Godly Play this Sunday: How the Church Tells Time
The Godly Play story for this Sunday is "How the Church Tells Time." Jenny Wallace and Michel Reavis are the storytellers, and they will be teaching the children the calendar of the church year. With Advent Sunday only a week away, it is a good time to learn the calendar anew. All children are invited to the parish breakfast potluck at 8:30 am, after which they will transition to the Godly Play Room for the lesson.
Godly Play occurs most Sundays at 9:00 am in the Godly Play Room--the room with the red doors off of the parish playground.

The Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Thursday, December 8Noonday Prayer, 11:40 am Low Mass, 12:00 noon Evening Prayer, 5:30 pm High Mass with Choir, 6:00 pm It is a venerable Anglo-Catholic tradition to celebrate with great honor the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast actually dates back to 5th century Syria, where it eventually gained much momentum throughout Eastern Christianity. The feast had spread through most of the Western Church by the 800s. The earliest missals in the West to include this feast, including the popular Sarum Missal of England, simply call the feast the Conception of the BVM, focusing solely on the event of her conception, and not worrying so much about the taint of original sin. It was an innovation of the Church in Rome to add the word "immaculate" to the title of this feast in the 1850s. St. Mark's will celebrate this feast day with a proper high mass. The St. Mark's Choir will sing, and Father Lillie will preach and celebrate. FROM THE WEBSITE

Calling All Cooks!
The Queen Emma Outreach Guild of St. Mark's is looking for people to help cook meals on Tuesday, December 6 and Friday, December 9. A signup sheet is on the back table of the church. The food will be delivered to the Episcopal Campus Ministry at UH, as well as the Family Promise Program at Church of the Crossroads. If you do not have time to cook an item for these dinners, you may also make a money donation to the Queen Emma Outreach Guild to help defray the costs. THE QUEEN EMMA OUTREACH GUILD

The Catechumenate
Sundays at 11:30 am
Did you know that Jesus was an Episcopalian? At least that is one of the jokes one of the books makes that our catechumens are reading. So far we have nine people meeting after High Mass, and there is still room for more, so if you are curious about what we do, come and check us out.
You can follow what the catechumens are doing by going to the parish website. A journal page has been created, and this journal will be updated periodically.

Saturday Night Sung Vigil Mass
This past September St. Mark's began to offer a Saturday Night Vigil Mass at 5:15 pm in the church. The mass uses the same readings as Sunday, and the same sermon is preached. The service lasts approximately 45 minutes, and hymns and chants are sung. Being that this is an evening service, we begin with the Service of Light from the Book of Common Prayer on occasion. We continue to experiment with this service, adding and subtracting certain elements on a regular basis, discovering what works and what does not work. Our main goal is to ensure that this mass has the integrity and dignity of our Sunday morning masses, but that it is also distinctly different than Sunday mornings. If you have not come to a Saturday night mass yet, we encourage you to come and check this mass out. Parking is free in our lot for this mass, as is the case for all masses at St. Mark's.
