Rollar's Cookies

It all started a while back in time when I couldn't find a decent tasting chocolate chip cookie. I tried a lot of them and none of them seemed to have enough of what makes a cookie a great cookie. I went and found a basic recipe and started with that. In a short time I had put all the things that I love in a cookie in there. I used the finest ingredients I could find, put enough of them in there to end up with what I thought tasted great. I was quite happy until I decided one year to bake them for my friends and give them as gifts for the holidays. I soon found my friends contacting me as early as August each year just to make sure they were still "on the list" to receive my cookies for the holidays. I also learned that they were keeping them from their spouses, children and close friends, just so they could have them all to themselves. People have told me for years to market and sell them so that everyone could have a chance to enjoy this wonderful treat. So here we are, making them available to all.

So after developing the perfect recipe, Rollar's Cookies was created!  Rich Rollar, the creator of the recipe, has been an Entrepreneur all his life. He partnered up with Amy Ottaviano, who has a marketing background.  It's a great combination and a winning recipe!  At Rollar's,  "We are Passionate about Cookies". You can contact them at 727-776-4552  or visit them on the web at www.rollarscookies.com.

TGS Brakes

Thad Shepard is the kind of guy that you just naturally trust....and like. An honest, all American guy, fixing things since childhood.  Bicycles, clocks, lawn mowers, and CARS!  His inquiring mind enjoyed projects as he progressed to obtaining his degree in Automotive & Engineering Technology.

He got a job opening brake shops for a mega corporation, and after a while, decided to open one for himself, and the rest is history!  Thad wants nothing but happy customers, and that, my friends, is what makes a very large client base.  Descended from a long line of entrepreneurs, including mother Helene Shepard, owner/manager of Ibis Bed & Breakfast, Thad is a can-do guy. Caring for Customers is his motto which has proven to be a formula for success.

At 912 3rd Street north TGS Brakes is open Monday-Friday (and on Saturdays to care for customers who can't schedule car care during week-days). He finds the week end one of the busier times. Give Thad a call at 727-230-0039, and he'll arrange to make your vehicle purr like a kitten, and then go out for a bass fishing expedition on Lake Tarpon!

The Safety Harbor Musicians Co-Op

Regina&NJ

Regina AaMacha of the Musicians Co-op accepts plaque from Normajeanne Anderson

A new resource for musicians and music lovers in Safety Harbor is located at 737 Main St. in the back of the New Orleans House at 7th Ave. N. and Main St. The co-op is a private club/studio for musicians, their family members, their fans and all music venue owners/ managers. If you want to find out about music in Safety Harbor, this is  a good place to check out.

Although the Co-Op is located in Safety Harbor, it is not limited to musicians in the immediate area. Many professional musicians tour the US and end up in our town. We are a place for all musicians, locals and those who are passing through. We also support existing venues and work to create listening venues
where our musicians  may perform. We do not charge a booking fee! We offer workshops, lessons, recording, promotion, sound reinforcement and other services that support our musicians.

On Fridays, The Musicians Co-Op will host an open mic from 6-10pm at Mi Boliche, October thru June. We help other local venues by hosting weekly open mic nights and showcase events in various locations
which allows the venue owners to select the music they want for their establishment. Monday 7-10pm Jolli Mon's, Tuesday 8-11pm The Grind House, Wednesday 8-11pm Brady's Backyard BBQ, Thursday 8-11pm The Brew Garden, Fridays 6-10pm My Boliche, Saturday 7-10pm Lu Lu's Steak House. These events are open to the general public.

The Safety Harbor Musicians Co-Op will host a solo acoustic, musicians supper from 7-10 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the co-op. You must be a member or guest of a member to attend these private events. For more information call Regina AaMacha at 727-742-8333 or www.safetyharbormusiciansco-op.com.

MayBAHBusiness After Hours

LuLu's was the site of the recent Business After Hours event held on April 13th.  Lulu's held their Formal Grand Opening the weekend of March 26th during Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest.  Lulu's proprietors Lindsey Clewer and her husband, Amadeu Fortes, were the gracious hosts of the monthly chamber event. Members mingled throughout the newly designed restaurant, enjoying the expanded deck area and admiring the newly added fire pit - no, it wasn't lit, but hold that thought temporarily because it is sure to be quite the welcome feature come those chilly Florida nights next winter!

BAHLuLu2

Board Member Chuck Ketcher & Chamber Member James Montgomery

With numerous artists in attendance, including chamber member Stacy Roth and volunteer Carol Zieres, the networking evolved into inspiration as a few guests began brainstorming at the mention of Lindsey's plans to soon re-do the mural on the outside back wall of Syd Entel Galleries. Murals have become part of the artistic culture now thriving in Safety Harbor, with several of the local murals featuring the work of Safety Harbor artists.

BAHLuLus3

Diane & Rick Cunningham with fellow Chamber member Kim DiCanini

Chamber chairman, Darlene Trieste and chairman-elect, Marie Padavich were among the attendees who enjoyed samples from LuLu's Picanha-Brazilian barbeque menu - a wonderful addition to Safety Harbor's growing array of eclectic restaurant choices.  Featuring the music of local musicians, a unique menu consisting of a buffet and skewers of ribeye, sausage, lamb, tri-tip, and pork tenderloin, together with an ambience quite fitting the quaintness of Safety Harbor, Lulu's is sure to become a Safety Harbor favorite in no time. You can contact LuLu's at 727-216-6648 or on the web at www.lulussteakhouse.com.

GLFthankyouThank You All

grapefruit legacy

Though the 1st Annual Grapefruit Festival was about Safety Harbor's past history, it also created some new history. We are so pleased at the number of organizations, businesses, artists, musicians and citizens that embraced this celebration. It was an honor and pleasure to be a part of this collaborative event that initiated communication and cooperation throughout our community.

Special thanks to the City of Safety Harbor for partnering with the Chamber. We also thank our Title Sponsor, The Safety Harbor Resort and Spa and Music Sponsor, Mease Countryside Hospital, for their support. Many thanks to the Grapefruit Legacy Committee for all the brainstorming, meetings and work done before hand. Our sincere gratitude to the Chamber staff and volunteers, O'Gosh volunteers and other volunteers for their valuable time and effort.

We look forward to next year's Festival to visit the Safety Harbor Regional Museum and view the progress of the ceremonial grapefruit tree that was graciously donated by the Safety Harbor Garden Club.

If you would like to serve on the committee for next year's Grapefruit Festival, please contact the Chamber at 727-726-2890.

Sincerely,

Darlene Trieste and Nancy Foster

StormwaterStormwater - Only Rain Down the Drain

When someone thinks of Florida they immediately think of water.  Florida's waters attract many vacationers to our beautiful area.  The City of Safety Harbor will soon be required to comply with stricter water quality limits for stormwater entering Tampa Bay.  In fact, on April 4th, 2011 the City adopted a resolution on Fertilizer Regulations to protect our waterways.  Studies have found that nitrogen is one of the major contributors to the present poor water quality of Old Tampa Bay by causing algae blooms that deplete oxygen needed by the fish and sea grass.  More than 10,000 tons of lawn fertilizers were sold in Pinellas and our neighboring counties from July 2008- June 2009.  A recent Tampa Bay Estuary Program, (TBEP), study of Old Tampa Bay clearly identifies fertilizers used on surrounding urban lands as the cause of "mystery muck" in the upper part of Tampa Bay - immediately adjacent to Safety Harbor. The cost of removing nitrogen from stormwater can amount to anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 per ton.

Residents can do their part in restoring Tampa Bay's healthy condition if they will:

  • Abide by the fertilizer ban and refrain from its use during the June 1st   to September 30th period.
  • Collect and bag for removal all grass clippings or leaves.
  •  Do not place or rake any material of any kind into a street gutter, catch basin or drainage way.
  •  Follow water-use restrictions to help conserve our water resources

If we all do our part, Tampa Bay can be returned to its former beauty and considerable recreational value.

By Debbie Drees, City of Safety Harbor Staff Engineer
