We also learned of the passing of

Andrew Peter Harbelis

HARBELIS Andrew Peter Harbelis, age 88, fell asleep in the Lord suddenly on July 9th, 2011 at Mt. Carmel Heart Hospital. Andrew, who is of Gahanna, leaves his loving wife of 24-years, Rosetta; a son, Peter Michael Harbelis of Lancaster, OH; step-daughter, Sondra Montgomery of Columbus; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; special cousins and a host of friends. Andy was proceeded in death by his mother Christina, who lived to be 100 years old, father Peter, sister Arete, (Toula), and brother George, as well other relatives in the US and Greece. Born in Gary, IN, Andrew, graduated from Horace Mann High School before entering Ohio University in Athens, where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a very proud American who served his country with dignity and class. As a bombardier in the Army Air Corps he attained the rank of Colonel. He was most proud of his service record. His bomber squadron completed 39 missions before being shot down in the Pacific. Recipient of the Purple Heart and other commendations, Andy was a living tribute to patriotism and respect for the flag and country. Always well liked and respected, Andy would give miniature history lessons to the kids and young children, as he wanted them to know the real story about World War II. Mr. Harbelis would carry a supply of his worn one dollar bills; he then would quiz each one of the youngsters and ask them who was on the one, two, five, ten, and twenty dollar bills. You could always find Andy doing something different at the Greek Festival. He loved people and the interaction between our customers, workers, and other people. Andy was a genuine people person and loved to strike up a conversation with just about everyone. He was always pleased when he could bring a smile to your face and make you feel good. Andy retired from North American Rockwell after 35 years of service. His wife, Rose, took great care in attending to his needs during the last few years. There wasn't a day that went by that he didn't tell Rose how much he appreciated and loved her for the wonderful care that she gave to him; he affectionately called her "Rosey Posey." Andy could still sing and be a troubadour even to the end. Friends may call at the O. R. WOODYARD CO. NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 2990 Bethel Rd., Columbus, Ohio. Wednesday, July 13, from 5-8 p.m., where a Trisagion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be Thursday, July 14, at 10 a.m. at the GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL, 555 North High St., Columbus, OH 43215. Presbyter Reverend Michael Kontos Jr. Economos and Presbyter Pantelemon Maillis officiating. Internment at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in remembrance of Andrew Harbelis.
