Creativity + Passion for Water
Creativity and a passion for solving water and wastewater issues, are two of the driving principles that regularly earn the staff of SKW's Water Resource Department kudos from our clients. One recent project demonstrates these goals and involves a plan to raise a Fulton water tower nearly 50 feet to put it back into service. On this project, SKW also fills the role of construction manager, lining up all the necessary subcontractors to complete the heavy civil and site work.
Out-of-the-box thinking is one of the prime reasons SKW was awarded our water tower project this summer. SKW came up with a novel idea, presented it to staff for initial approval, then did a good job presenting the idea to the council, clearly answering all their questions. The next thing we knew, we had a creative plan and a unique, turnkey delivery method. We love it! Greg Hayes, Public Works Director, City of Fulton, Missouri SKW is also showing success in assisting clients with arranging non-traditional financing. State Revolving Funds, Rural Development Grants and Loans, and other typically reliable sources of funding have become more difficult to obtain. Those funding voids have opened the door for financing options such as direct loans and lease-purchase agreements. While the cost to borrow this money may be more substantial, it is also more readily available. It can offer communities the ability to deliver projects more quickly and allows the use of alternative project delivery methods such as design-build. Have questions about creative water or wastewater strategies? Contact Gary Cunningham, Manager Water Resouces, 573-219-1145. |

Missouri State Programs Focus on Bridge Safety
Missouri's Bridge Engineering Assistance Program (BEAP) is the program whereby local governments can receive engineering assistance for existing bridges where definite problems have been identified. As an approved MoDOT BEAP consultant for more than 14 years, SKW typically provides services for nearly one-third of all BEAP studies funded each year. While each bridge project is unique, services may include inspection of the structure, analyzing conditions and formulating recommendations. SKW also assists Missouri through participation as an approved provider of fracture critical inspections. MoDOT utilizes this agreement to conduct structural examinations of local county and city bridges throughout the state. Contact Gary Strack to learn more about our BEAP Services and other bridge safety programs.

Communities Enjoy $796,000 in Sidewalk Grants
Grants totaling $796,000 were recently awarded to communities that SKW assisted in preparing funding applications. Safe Routes to School and the MoDOT/Federal Highway Administration Enhancement Funds are two successful programs, which bring needed improvements to otherwise underfunded projects. Critical to SKW's assistance on these applications is having a detailed understanding of the funding requirements, keeping up-to-date with Americans with Disabilities Act design standards, and effectively estimating project costs as budget overruns in these programs are borne by the applicant. Though the fiscal year applications for these programs are now closed, look for future application requests as these programs are expected to be recharged. Contact Steve Schultz to learn more. Unique Scanning Opportunity
Taking a unique opportunity to demonstrate SKW's newest Leica HDS Laser Scanner, Casey Hedge, expecting mother and SKW employee, volunteered to participate in an unusual scanning project. The scanner combines robotically controlled instrumentation with reflector-less laser technology (LIDAR) to collect surface data in 3D with survey-grade accuracy. This collection of spatially accurate coordinate data is referred to as a "point cloud" or in this case, a "Casey cloud." This in-office exercise illustrated the speed of the surveying team's newest addition and also provided Casey with a unique documentation of her pregnancy.
