And another thing... | |
|
|
Greetings!
And another thing...
Actually, I've got two "and another" things on my mind? May I share?
1. Sunday, we capped off several weeks in the Book of James with a treat: Ron recited, as a memorized monologue, all five major sections from James that we've looked at (an amazing feat, to be sure), and then we broke up into five inter-generational groups to consider the Scripture.
Here's what I asked the groups to do: Re-read the section of Scripture (one of the afore-mentioned passages from James) and summarize in, say, three or four sentences.

We've not done that before-- break into small groups on a Sunday morning-- and it was especially nifty to see young and old together considering God's word.
If you'd like to see both the Scripture each group considered, and also their summaries (and more pics, too), please click right here to check out the posting on the website.
The intergenerational component of Sunday's gathering makes for a nice intro to the second item on my "and another thing" list I wanted to mention to you:
2. Our special weekend focused on children coming next Saturday and Sunday. Check out the information and links titled "Children and the Church" just below-- it's not too late to jump in and join us next Saturday.
Our special guest, Dr. Connie Bull, has all kinds of nifty information for you if you're interested in children and their life in the church, if you'd like to hear about the trend toward inter-generational worship, and if you'd like to learn more ideas for doing worship at home with kids.
One more important point: Next Sunday, October 7, kids will really be involved in worship-- including a special blessing of children. Hope to see you and yours there!
The Lord be with you!
Pastor Chris
PS: John Stephan is telling us about a monthly, multi-church worship service meeting on the first Friday of the month. John, who's part of the band, tells us that worship starts at 7 PM at the Westside Christian Church, located at 2000 Opportunity Dr, in Roseville (corner of Foothill Blvd and Vineyard Dr) next to Denio's auction center. Service will last about 1 1/2 hours and consists of worship and praise music, all corporate, and a time for prayer. Questions? Email John.

One-Day Workshop this Saturday, October 6
Interested in kids, their life in the church, and their ministry in the world?
Fresh off of an amazing presentation in Orange Park, Florida (where several of our leadership folks had the honor of hearing her) Dr. Connie Bull, a kids ministry specialist and member of the Ancient-Future Faith Network, is coming to Sacramento for a one-day seminar. Plans are still coming together, but mark your calendars now for Saturday, October 6 (from 9 AM to 3:15 PM), located at the Oak Avenue Free Methodist Church in Orangevale.
The event is open to the public and is aimed at church members, ministry leaders, parents-- anyone interested in kids and their life in the church. We're asking for a fee of $15 per person (kids are free) to cover lunch and use of the facilities.
Kids of all ages will be an important part of the day, too. Want more details? Please click here.
Here's a handy flyer with clickable links to share with others: Handy flyer.

You Are Invited
Baptism This Sunday Afternoon...
Rick and Deanne Asche have invited the whole Epiclesis family to a special service of baptism this Sunday afternoon. Rick is a student at the Institute for Worship Studies and, as part of one of his final classes, is working on a baptismal curriculum for kids. By the way, much of the liturgy for the day is based on that of the very early church, so if you'd like to see something very close to how the ancients baptized, come check it out!
Rick has worked through the discipleship material with his own daughters, Aubry and Jessalyn, and they're set for baptism this Sunday, Oct. 7th. 3-4:30 PM. Here are the details for you:
Location: 4322 Olive Ranch Rd. Granite Bay CA.
Rick and Deanne write, Come celebrate with us the baptism of Aubry and Jessalyn into faith in Jesus Christ and His Church!
Questions??? Call Rick, 916-708-2750

It's Baaaack.
Once again, the entire population of our region will gather in Orangevale to witness the most amazing thing ever: The mother of all Yard Sales.
And once there, they'll find an amazing assortment of rummage and garage sale goodies. You can't miss this thing. And more important, your family, friends, and neighbors shouldn't miss it, either. We're raising money for previous and ongoing mission efforts, so the more the merrier!
Need more information or want to donate items? Please contact Norm. Please take note of this: We especially need your help the day before to prepare and price items. Can you lend a hand?
See you and yours on Saturday, October 20 from 8 AM to 4 PM, at 5310 Main Avenue, Orangevale.

Bring a Dish on October 21
Here's something fun: We're planning an informal potluck-- oops, we mean "foodfest"-- for Sunday, October 21, following church. Just bring something yummy to share.
Immediately after worship, we'll set up a few tables in the chapel, a serving line in the lobby, and then hit the plates.
We've got refrigerator space for cold and frozen things, and if you want to bring something hot, please bring a crockpot, etc., to keep 'em warm.
One more nifty note: We'll be taking the time at our foodfest to show video and share stories about our recent outreach to the Navajo Nation, so be looking foward to that!

An Ancient-Future Quote to Note
On the Holy Spirit...
One cannot see the Father without the Holy Spirit! It would be like living in a house at night when the lamps are extinguished: one's eyes would be darkened and could not exercise their function. Unable to distinguish the value of objects, one might very well treat gold as if it were iron. It is the same with the spiritual world: it is impossible to maintain a life of holiness without the Spirit . It would be easier for an army to continue its maneuvers without a general, or for a choir to sing on key without its director.
--Basil the Great
