Fear, Love, and Learning from Neal | |
|
|
Greetings!
I surely hope you have a Neal in your life. I do.
Last Sunday our community of faith was looking at the Gospel of John, and also his epistle, and a verse about fear really caught our eyes. You know the one, I'll bet:
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love (1 John 4:18).
It's a familiar passage, but have you meditated much on the bit that says, "fear has to do with punishment..."? There was something about that particular phrase that struck a chord with several of us on Sunday.
I had begun our teaching time with the question, "What does the resurrection have to do with abiding in Christ-- of being in the vine?" We had some good discussion (Epiclesis folks are really deep thinkers) but Neal kind of brought it all home in his usual thoughtful, succinct, and very deep way. Here's a paraphrase of his insight: "The answer is that perfect love took the punishment on Himself. That's how fear is cast out, and that's how we can abide in Him."
Isn't that beautiful? In other words, the straight line that connects fear and punishment goes straight through Perfect Love. The resurrection makes abiding in the Vine possible because fear and punishment have been separated.
I love learning from Neal.
Praying that you have a Neal in your life,
Pastor Chris |

Meet Dr. Ron Richardson
Congrats to one of our own...
The Epiclesis family is so proud of one of our own, Ron Richardson, who now may be addressed as Dr. Ron Richardson. Ron, and his especially able thesis mentor Chris Alford, heard late Sunday afternoon that his final written work had been approved by the thesis director at the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. Ron will graduate with about 15 or so colleagues at the school's annual ceremonies this June. Congratulations to Dr. Ron and to his dear wife Ruth without whom it wouldn't have happened. We're proud of you, Ron!

An Ancient-Future Quote to Note
Tough Times...
Not every gracious person is a friend. Neither is everyone who strikes you an enemy. Better are the wounds of a friend than the tender kisses of an enemy. It is better to love with severity than to deceive with gentleness.... Those who restrain the frenzied and those who stir up the lethargic are both offensive and, in both cases, are motivated by love for the patient. Who can love us more than God does? And yet He not only gives us sweet instruction, but also continually stimulates us by healthy fear. God often adds the sharp medicine of suffering to the soothing remedies He comforts us with. He afflicts even the pious and devout patriarchs with famine, strikes a rebellious nation by even more severe punishments, and refuses to take away the apostle's thorn in the flesh (although asked to remove it three times) so that He may perfect His strength in weakness. Let us, by all means, love even our enemies, for this is right. God commands us to do so in order that we may be children of our heavenly Father "who maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." As we praise His gifts, let us also ponder His correction of those whom He loves. -Augustine
