And I, when I am lifted up from the earth... |
Last week, in John's gospel, we saw Jesus refer to the bronze serpent in the desert, and then to Himself, when He talked about His reason for coming into the world. In this week's gospel reading, also from John, He says this:
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.
Lifted up. What does Jesus mean by that? Is it the cross to which He's referring? Is it to Him being high and exalted?
You might want to visit the Hebrews passage for this Sunday, along with the gospel reading, because it's the best place to find an explanation of how and why Christ Jesus is the new covenant. It also explains (especially in Chapter 8) why God found fault with the old covenant and talks about the distinguishing features of the new. One of those features is that God's law will be written on peoples' hearts (a theme we also see in the Old Testament passage).
