"I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous." |
Our Lenten series, "The Cross and the Covenant," continues this Sunday with perhaps the most well-known of the Old Testament covenants. God meets with Abram in a mysterious, even awesome encounter-- but it's one that had implications that stretched much farther into the future than the Patriarch could probably imagine:
"As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations."
The Scriptures for Sunday (next column) tie God's promise to Abraham with the suffering of Christ. Take some time to read the account of God's covenant with Abram (in the Genesis passage) then follow it up with Paul's message to the Romans about the law (where he talks about the promise made to Abraham).
My heart is still full from an amazing worship encounter last Sunday-- and I'm already looking forward to worshiping our Sovereign with you this Sunday.
Walking the journey of Lent with you,
