A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, "If you choose, you can make me clean." |
This season of Epiphany, we're taking a look at Jesus' unique authority-- the authority to preach, to bring repentance, to cast out evil.
Both the Old and New Testament readings for this Sunday center on healing. In 2 Kings, the foreign army commander Naaman found healing from Ithe God of Israel. And in the Mark passage, another leper came to Jesus begging to be healed saying, "If you choose, you can make me clean." Mark records the dramatic answer:
Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, "I do choose. Be made clean!"
Jesus Christ is also our healer. Both lepers in Sunday's stories had a simple faith-- a faith that believed that God has the power to heal. Sometimes life is a difficult race that we run with some hardship, as Paul writes in Corinthians. Jesus stands ready to heal and to help us run that we might win the prize.
Looking forward to seeing healing take place this Sunday,
