BreakForth Canada

Greetings!

May I please ask you for help? Your fervent prayer is needed.

Later this month, Sheila, Ellen Koehler (our church's director of music and liturgy), and Laura Nelson (one of our worship leaders) will be travelling to Edmonton, Canada, to attend BreakForth Canada, North American's largest worship and equipping conference.

BreakforthI've been asked to lead an all-day workshop and several individual sessions on worship in general and on what it means to be "Ancient-Future" in particular.

Two of the sessions will be special, first-ever offerings called "Encouraging Words for Weary Worshipers", opportunities to minister to wounded worship leaders, and two of the sessions will be Ancient-Future worship services on Sunday.

And this is where you come in: I need your prayer. No, actually, I'm counting on it.

A chat with their office last week revealed that the sign-ups for these sessions are very high and we will have the chance to minister to hundreds of people. We'll be telling them about what God is doing at Epiclesis, sharing information about the Ancient-Future Faith Network, and most important, praying with and showing pastoral care to servants of the Church who most need it.

Please pray for inspiration and insight while I prepare the materials, effectiveness while I deliver them, for the whole team as we minister (for Ellen as she shares about her art and ministry, and for Sheila and Laura as they pray for people and help lead worship), and of course for safe travels to and from the arctic North.

I'm so grateful for your prayer support and look forward to sharing with you when we return. I'm praying that God has many divine appointments in store.

The Lord be with you... and see you this Sunday!

Pastor Chris

AdventMini-Series Starts This Sunday Afternoon

Two or Three Spots Left...

Abraham and IsaacOur own Ron Richardson has completed a fantastic mini-series on art, covenant, and the Lord's Supper. Part of Ron's final doctoral work, the four-session series will focus on how God reaches out to us in the Eucharist-- the Table of the Lord-- and he's going to look at several great, classic works of art to show the way.

There are 2 or 3 spots left, so act quickly if you'd like to attend; space is limited in the chapel because of the configuration of tables and technology.

The sessions will launch on this coming Sunday, January 22. The sessions will meet at 5 PM, at the Carmichael Chapel on four consecutive Sundays.

PrayerPrayer Mini-Retreat Coming in February

Guest Specialist Coming to Epiclesis...

OPrayer Retreatne of the international members of our growing Ancient-Future Faith Network will be in Sacramento in February. Brett Pavia, and his wife Sina, will be our special guests for a few days at Epiclesis. They operate a ministry in Europe (most recently in Hungary, and soon to be in Spain) called "The Urban Abbey", a retreat center principally for college-aged students), where young people can learn how to practice some of the ancient spiritual disciplines.

Brett himself is a specialist in the prayer patterns and practices of the early church, particularly the Desert Fathers, and was one of Bob Webber's students some years ago at Wheaton College.

Pastor Chris has asked Brett to lead a one-day mini-retreat on Saturday, February 11 (a morning session, short break for lunch, and a brief afternoon session). Watch this space for details and, in the meantime, mark your calendars for February 11.

Our plan is to use Brett's visit and mini-retreat to prepare us for a special Lenten series of four J2J sessions (beginning the week of February 26). Be on the lookout for more information on that J2J series, too. The scheduling of the sessions will be up to each J2J group and will wrap up about Holy Week. Contact your J2J leader for more information.

QuoteAn Ancient-Future Quote to Note

Pure Souls

No one can see the "face," that is, the appearance of God's wisdom, and live. For all who strive to love God with all their heart, soul, and mind longs to study this revelation. Through its study, those who love their neighbors encourage them as much as they can. All the Law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.... Therefore this "appearance" whisks away every rational soul with the desire for it, and makes the soul even more pure and eager for it. For souls become purer the more they rise to spiritual things. They rise more to spiritual things the more they die to fleshly things. So, while we are absent from the Lord and walk by faith instead of sight, we should see the "back parts" or flesh of Christ. By that very faith, we stand on the solid foundation and rock of faith and we observe it from a safe watch tower.... For we come to love to see the face of Christ even more as we recognize how much Christ first loved us in His flesh.
