My World
Looks like summer is over, cooled down into the 70's and 80's....my kind of weather. Open doors and lots of fresh air.
I've been working really hard on the Bases and Cases DVD, very detail oriented and lots of joinery. I'm not sure how long the final product will be, but it won't be a short one, too much to cover. If you check out the blog you have seen a couple of pieces that are included. Each piece was chosen for it's construction process and the challenges each presents. Read Article

"Mastering Woodworking with Charles Neil"
Starting in mid October, we will launch a new woodworking show that will air each week on our web site.
In the show, Charles will be building a project, however, his focus will be on teaching woodworking skills and techniques that he uses to reach the end result. No matter what project he is building, you will find details like they have never been presented before.
The premier of the show will feature the building of a corner cupboard similar to the one pictured on the right. Many of you have emailed that you would like to make one so in the show, Charles will teach you the techniques he uses when building a corner cupboard.
Did you know that the term cupboard refers to a case with glass doors and cabinet refers to a case with solid doors?

Failure Is Not an Option (Joinery)
Right now my focus is on completing the 'Cases and Bases' DVD set and getting some projects completed and delivered.
I thought it would be a good time to share some of the joinery that I use on cases (actually, on just about everything). These techniques are certainly not new, or innovative, they are in actuality, some of the oldest out there. These techniques have survived the test of time, a lot of time, I have never seen them fail. One of the points I want to make is that these joints are not difficult to make, they can be done by hand, by machine or you can be like me and use a combination of both!

Corner Cabinet Shelves - Design & Cut
First of all, they aren't as difficult as they may seem. Experience has shown that the long, 45 degree sides of the shelf pose the biggest challenge, both in lay-out and cutting, not to mention getting all the shelves to be exactly the same can be an issue, but don't let it be one. Here is where making a full size pattern is a must. Let's lay one out and make a pattern. Read Article

The Finish Line
Last month I told you I have been working with the Micro Mesh sandpaper for rubbing out, I have also been working with the SIA brand of pads for the same, the results are amazing.
In the finish class last week, we took some red oak, planed it, grain filled it with some Timbermate, stained it and then "badly brushed" some water base finish on it and the key here is "badly brushed." Read The Finish Line

My Tool Chest
Now while most would argue that abrasives are not tools, I would disagree. In my world, they are very important tools and over the course of my career, I have used about every brand and type out there.
One thing I will tell you, seems everyone out there is cutting corners, sand paper that used to hold up and do well has gotten thinner backing, inconsistent grits and doesn't wear very long at all, the price isn't going down but the quality is. Read My Tool Chest
