An awards evening was held on 21 December 2011, at Lords Golf and Country Club in White Notley, celebrating the achievements of our residents at both our Braintree Foyer and New Directions Lifehouse.
With almost 100 attendees, the awards ceremony began with a recognition of the many achievements of resident with over 60 Awards and Qualifications where presented on the night:
At New Directions lifehouse, the highlight was " Volunteer of the Year" which went to Terry O'Dell.
"Terry has been at New Directions Lifehouse for almost 2 years and has made a huge contribution to his community through gardening, painting and many other volunteer activities".
Over 60 Awards were presented to the residents at Braintree Foyer, which included awards for English, Maths and ICT qualifications, Essex Arts Awards and certificates for participation in Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award programme at Braintree Foyer.
There were also presentations of vocational awards from the Construction Industry. This training was provided free of charge by SAHA contractors Apollo.
Special musical performances where also held in the evening showcasing the talents of our young people, with a live performance by dance group Funky Feet. The dance they performed was created and choreographed by the young people at Braintree Foyer and their dance tutors.
"It was an exhilarating performance and was greeted by rapturous applause Mark Watson - Foyer Manager"
Funky Feet streetdance group were formed by Braintree Foyer to provide a positive creative outlet for young people in Braintree. It is extremely popular and continues to attract new recruits.
Colin Falconer - Foyer Federation Director of Innovation was kind enough to attend the event but was somewhat surprised by what he found, he wrote in his blog:
'There's no T (for talent) in their postcode,' was my favourite line from a young person having fun at the excellent Braintree Foyer/SAHA awards night. What mattered most though was seeing the young people enjoying the moment, celebrating their own achievements, supporting each other. These certainly were not the images from a disadvantaged thinking advert.
The Foyer magazine noted that, 'At Braintree Foyer we focus on inspiring our young people to develop their talents and aspire to great things. To do this we invest in challenging opportunities which will motivate and stretch our young people.' This is a service that has not just been touched by Open Talent, but is running with it.'
2011 was a great year for Braintree Foyer capped off by a wonderful evening of celebration but 2012 promises to be even better.....
