UCC History and Polity Course Fall, 2012

Friends,
Over the last several years the Southeast Conference in collaboration with the Center for Progressive Renewal has developed an online 13 week UCC history and polity class that has now been taken by 10's of members in discernment and candidate for privilege of call. The class has received very positive feedback from participants and COM's who have interviewed participants, and I believe is getting progressively better as we refine it.
The class has been accepted by Candler School of Theology, Columbia Theological Seminary, Vanderbilt Divinity School, Bangor Theological Seminary, and Union Theological Seminary in New York as a three credit course. For those who do not require credit, they can receive a certificate of completion. I am willing to discuss the class with representatives of your committees on ministry or you as to whether it can meet your requirements for authorization of ministry. The purpose of this course is to explore the history, polity, theologies, and practices of the United Church of Christ and its predecessor denominations. The course will include an exploration of denominational identity, hidden histories within the denomination, case studies around current issues of polity and structure, current ecumenical conversations, emerging trends within the United Church of Christ, and more. Successful completion of this course will fulfill the history and polity requirement for authorized ministry in the United Church of Christ in most associations and conferences. However, please check with your own association for confirmation. Taking the course for credit can be arranged for full-time students of Candler School of Theology as a self-directed study in denominational studies. Arrangements must be made in advance with the facilitator, Tim Downs, and the registrar's office. Please contact Tim Downs if you wish to take this class for credit in another seminary. All those taking the class for credit will be expected to complete an additional paper of 20-25 pages in length at the end of the class.
Dates: Wedneday, August 29 - November 28, 2012
The cost is $599.00.
