Aug. 12 - Day of Prayer for the Sikh Community

In the wake of the tragic shootings at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Council of Churches is calling for a Day of Prayer for the Sikh Community.

Our hope is that next Sunday will provide an opportunity for Christians to pray for the victims, their families, and for the Sikh community in Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and elsewhere. There are approximately 700,000 Sikhs nationwide.

We also hope that Christians will take the opportunity to learn more about the Sikh religion (www.sikhs.org) and find ways of standing in solidarity with the Sikh community to express condolences and support during these days of grief and sadness.

Bentley de Bardelaben, Executive for Administration and Communications for UCC Justice and Witness Ministries, will be in Kansas City the weekend of September 22 & 23. There are two events I hope you can attend.

  • Saturday, September 22 from 5:00 - 8:30 pm there will be a cocktail and hors d'oeuvre reception for all the United Church of Christ clergy and their guest. It will be at 418 W. Meyer Blvd. in Kansas City Missouri. The purpose is just for us to get together and meet Bentley and have some fun.
  • Sunday, September 23 at 3:00 there will be a gathering of UCC people interested in working for missions and justice at Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ. This will be a great time to find out what Justice work is going on at the National Church. It is also important for the National Church to know what justice work is going on in our local churches.

I hope you can attend the cocktail party and meet Bentley and other UCC ministers in the Kansas City and surrounding area. Also please let the people that are interested in Justice Work from your church know about the gathering on Sunday so they can get it on their calendars.

If you have any questions my phone number is 913-205-7997 and my email address is OsgoodPaul@aol.com. I will send out more detailed information later.

Sincerely,

Paul Osgood

United Church of Christ Announces Staffing Additions to Ministerial Excellence, Support and Authorization Ministry Team

The United Church of Christ has announced new staff members on its Ministerial Excellence, Support and Authorization Ministry (MESA) Team. MESA, located within the Local Church Ministries Covenanted Ministry of the UCC, focuses specifically on supporting ministers in the denomination.

"In Spanish the word MESA means table," said Holly MillerShank, MESA team leader. "Our work as a ministry team is to support the tables where authorized ministers serve - be that Christ's table where the Holy Meal is served, the tables in a local shelter where the needs of the community are served, or fellowship hall tables where Committees on Ministry gather to discern new authorized leadership for the UCC."

Effective September 17, 2012, the following staff will join the team at the Church House in Cleveland:

*The Rev. Kathy Clark joins the MESA team as minister for members in discernment.
*The Rev. Elizabeth Dilley joins the MESA team as minister for ministers in local churches.
*The Rev. Malcolm Himschoot joins the MESA team as minister for ministerial transition.
*Karen Koza came on board this spring as the administrative assistant for MESA and the Congregational Vitality and Discipleship Ministries (CVD)
