Together We Can Overcome AIDS

This week more than 20,000 people working in the field of HIV/AIDS education, prevention and treatment, as well as people living with HIV/AIDS, policy makers and others committed to ending the epidemic are gathered in Washington DC at the International AIDS Conference. Among them are some 750 faith advocates committed to working for health, dignity and justice for all.

People of faith have long been part of the decades-long battle to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, grounded in the theological understanding that all people are made in the image of God, and are deserving of respect and dignity. To deny the humanity of one diminishes the humanity of all of us. Discriminatory practices that marginalize at-risk communities, denying access to prevention and treatment and often making them the targets of hate and violence are both morally unconscionable and bad public health policy.

Join us in calling on members of Congress to support strong U.S. global leadership in ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by:

  • Working to end discriminatory laws around the world that marginalize at-risk communities and limit access to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment practices. In over 70 countries, laws that criminalize consensual, same-sex relationships push people to the margins of society, denying them access to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and cultivating a climate of fear and stigma that often leaves at-risk individuals living in poverty conditions and targets of hate violence.
  • Support funding of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to provide treatment for 6 million people by 2013 and 5 million by 2015.

Since the beginning of the spread of HIV and AIDS the General Synod of United Church of Christ has addressed concerns related to HIV/AIDS in church and society, declaring its compassionate concern about the growing HIV epidemic in the United States and throughout the world, and its support for all those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in a resolution at GS27. Further, at our last gathering the General Synod passed a resolution supporting international human rights related to sexual orientation and calling for an end to the criminalization of same-sex relationships.

You voice is needed! Take action to eliminate barriers to HIV/AIDS treatment and sustain international assistance for AIDS prevention.

Pastoral Letter from the Leaders of the United Church of Christ

During the UCC's National Youth Event 2012, the Collegium of Officers and the Council of Conference Ministers of the United Church of Christ published a pastoral letter on the future and the relevance of the denomination and the youth who are its caretakers.

Pastors and lay leaders, please download the pdf version of the letter to share with your congregations during worship.

National youth event this year was a spiritual blessing in my life. I was reminded of my duties as a Christian in the world today such as environmental stewardship. The opportunity to meet more Christian youth and expand my spiritual support network was amazing. The workshops were enlightening and fun as well. I gained guidance in Christian song writing, shared my faith story with others, and much more.

What God blessed me with most of all I think is an opportunity. I was able to play guitar onstage in front of nearly 3000 youth, it was exhilarating to see so many people fired up for God. I have played and sung in church but nothing has paralleled that event. When I looked out into the crowd I saw hope for the future of the church and the world. I feel rejuvenated spiritually and physically from NYE. It was exactly what I needed before continuing my life journey.

Christmas in July

You have the opportunity to be a part of this ministry that cares for the active and retired clergy and lay employees of the United Church of Christ through your participation in this year's Christmas Fund Offering.

Your gift to the Christmas Fund will not only assist pastors, but also provide for the Supplementation of Small Annuities, Supplementation of Health Premiums and provide Christmas "Thank You" Gift Checks next December to low-income retirees.

Your gifts are needed more than ever to help the growing number of retirees whose low income annuities make it difficult to meet increasing living costs. This is your opportunity to participate in God's promise of renewal by enabling this ministry of compassion and care.
