Disaster Recovery Sites in need of Volunteers NOW!!

Greetings from UCC Volunteer Ministries and UCC National Disaster Ministries:

The years 2011 and 2012 brought many challenges to communities in the form of tornadoes, severe storms and flooding. Thousands of volunteers have formed work groups across multiple denominations to assist these communities in recovery to rebuild/repair homes. Your continuing commitment to serving communities in need is inspiring and greatly appreciated.

Locations ready to help you serve in disaster recovery are listed on our website. Please pass the word of this need and consider forming another group yourself.

Peace,

SAVE THE DATE

WOMEN--
An invitation is offered again this year to attend a retreat event on October 3-5 Midweek / October 5-7 Weekend with our KS Disciples Women Sisters.  Registration deadline is September 1, 2012

Our Speaker, Dr. Sharyn Dowd, brings such a great knowledge and love of scripture; it will be an incredible experience. Mark your calendars so you don't miss this special speaker and enjoy time spent with your sisters across the region.

This year will see the second kid's Day Camp for those attending the Saturday Only retreat sessions. This is open for children age 2 through middle school ($25). The retreat and day camp registration forms are now on the website at
Cost of the retreat remains at $75 for a full retreat and $45 for a partial (no overnight) retreat, thanks to a generous grant from the Kansas Bible Chair Fund.

The hands-on service project this year will be to assemble Church World Service baby care Kits. See the KO Women's notice that outlines the contents, or go to the CWS website
ATTN: The regional office staff in Topeka said they are already noticing a slowdown of mail delivery due to changes for the United States Postal Service, so send those forms in at least one week ahead of the deadline.

With the tremendous excitement of President Obama's recent decision to grant deferred status to DREAM Act eligible students, there will also be a tremendous amount of work to get ready! US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has already said that this order will be implemented in 60 days from its announcement, which means roughly August 15th! There is much to do and much that congregations can do to be a part of this historic move on the part of the Administration to secure the rights of immigrants. Moreover, there is much that congregations can do to build on this development and to get ready for a push for actual legislative reform in 2013. Let's not stop here - let's build on this for the 2013 Congress!

On July 30 from 3-4:30 pm EST, we will host an important call with members of the Department of Homeland Security and USCIS, to talk specifically about what congregations can do to get ready to help DREAM Act eligible students with implementation of the President's decision. We will also talk about some strategies that we can adopt through the work of implementation to build our movement to defend and secure the rights of immigrants as we prepare for a legislative push in 2013. To join in this significant call on Monday July 30 from 3-4:30 pm EST, please call 1-800-920-7487 and the code is 155851. Please share this with other congregations who might be interested in sharing in this important work!
