UCC History, Polity & Theology Course
|
| |
Friends:
The Center for Progressive Renewal in cooperation with the Pathways Program of the Southeast Conference of the UCC (Conference Minister, Rev. Tim Downs is our instructor) is making available to ministry candidates in your conference a comprehensive 12 week course on the History & Polity of the UCC. This course is done completely online and includes weekly Skype office hours with the instructor and two inter-active conference calls. Otherwise all of the weekly assignments can be completed by student on their schedule. The syllabus for this course has previously been approved by several seminaries and divinity schools for credit. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to complete this important requirement.
Please note there are currently only five seats remaining in this course so act today!

| | | |
Tim Downs, Conference Minister of the Southeastern Conference of the United Church of Christ will lead participants through a twelve week course on the history, polity, theologies and practices of the present UCC and its predecessor denominations. The course will include an exploration of denominational identity, hidden histories within the denomination, case studies around current issues of polity and structure, current ecumenical conversations, emerging trends within the United Church of Christ, and more. Successful completion of this course will fulfill the history and polity requirement for authorized ministry in the United Church of Christ in most associations and conferences. All students must participate in the orientation conference call Wednesday, August 24 at 7 p.m. EASTERN time. All students must participate in the closing conference call on Wednesday, November 9. If there are clergy seeking privilege of call in an association of the Southeast Conference of the UCC, Rev. Downs will assist individually with the preparation of the papers required by the Committee on Ministry.
Registration is open until Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

CLERGY BOOK GROUP, TAKE 2
|
|

|

We had such a great time studying Phyllis Tickle's book, The Great Emergence that we have decided to tackle a second book. This time we'll be reading Liberating Hope! Daring to Renew the Mainline Church by two UCC pastors, Michael Piazza and Cameron Trimble. The book was just published in July so it is full of fresh ideas and commentary.
The group will meet September 8 and 22 from 10:30am-12 noon at the Conference Office in Wichita, KS. Folks that have time then go out to lunch.
Read Chapters 1-2 for September 8 and Chapters 4-6 for September 22. Other chapters and dates will be set at one of the gatherings.
If you are unable to come to Wichita, then we still encourage you to read the book-either with a group of pastors in your area or just on your own.

Resources for Commemoration of September 11th
|
|
|
Friends,
As we approach the 10th anniversary of events of September 11, 2001, I wanted to share with you resources that have been gathered and created for use by local churches and other groups who might be planning worship services or other events to commemorate that date. The theme "9/11 plus 10: Between Memory and Hope" was chosen as a reminder that we have much to do yet to find peaceful solutions for the strife that exists in our world.
Your staff in the national setting working as an inter-ministry team; and with the assistance of ecumenical partners have selected items that we thought would be most helpful to planners. The resources begin with a pastoral letter from the UCC President, Geoffrey Black; as we move toward the anniversary date there will be an open letter from each of the other Collegium members, and items from ecumenical partners that may be helpful.

100th Anniversary Celebration
|
| |
Fairmount UCC, Wichita, KS will be having a special 100th anniversary celebration of the actual church building on Sept. 11, 2011 (also featuring the renovated sanctuary for those who haven't seen it).
There will be a special church service at 10:30 am; followed by a light lunch.
At 2:00pm, there will be a concert performed by organist, Celia Goering; followed by a reception with cookies and punch. The music department at Wichita State University is hoping to see a great turnout for the concert (they have some idea of plans to use the sanctuary for small recitals, etc - and we value the tie with the university).
