JESUS SEMINAR ON THE ROAD
COMES TO OKC

How Christianity Evolved will be addressed at The Jesus Seminar on the Road slated for October 8-9, in Oklahoma City.

A traveling seminar that brings Fellows of the Jesus Seminar into conversation with interested people across North America and around the world, this seminar will feature Bernard Brandon Scott, Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Okla. and Joanna Dewey, Harvey H. Guthrie, Jr. Professor Emerita of Biblical Studies at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass.

Together these scholars will discuss First-Century Jesus Movements-How did Christianity Evolve?
 Friday and Saturday
 October 8 and 9
Mayflower Congregational (UCC) Church
3901 NW 63rd Street, in Oklahoma City.

Three lectures are planned for this two-day event. On Friday at 7 p.m. is From Jesus to Constantine-Disunity to Unity. The Saturday morning workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. with The Many Faces of Early Christianity. The afternoon session starts at 1:30 p.m. and will discuss Living in the Empire.

"The resurrection has come to stand for what Christianity is all about," said Scott. "At this program, I will preview my new book The Trouble with Resurrection. Resurrection is a major Christian belief. These sessions aspire to prompt the audience to consider questions such as: what does the New Testament really say about the resurrection; what is the influence of Judaism on Christian belief in the resurrection; how did the resurrection become the central belief in Christianity; why did early Christians choose to believe in the resurrection; and why is resurrection not the right word?"

Scott earned his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1971. He is a charter member of the Jesus Seminar. His course offerings in recent years have included New Testament Greek, Introduction to the New Testament, Romans, The Historical Jesus, Theological Issues in Film, and the PTS Borderlinks study tour. Scott has authored several books, including Hear Then the Parable (1989), Re-Imagine the World (2002), and served as editor of Jesus Reconsidered (2007).

Joanna Dewey is a specialist in the Gospel of Mark, orality studies, and feminist approaches to the New Testament. The author of several books, including Mark as Story (with David Rhoads, 1999), she received her M.Div. from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, in Berkeley, Calif. and her Ph.D., from Graduate Theological Union, also in Berkeley.

Registration is $75 for this two-day event. Cost for a single session is: Friday evening lecture: $20; Saturday morning lecture $30; and the Saturday afternoon workshop is also $30. Student pricing is $30 for all sessions.
