FOR THE TROOPS
United Church of the Good Shepherd, KCK Rev. Arthur L. Foster, Ph.D., Stated Supply
Each Sunday during concerns and joys we remember our men and women soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Parents and grandparents share news of phone calls, emails and Skype messages from the various camps.
Recently we decided to put "boots" on our concerns. In the last 4 weeks we gathered supplies to provide 9 large APO boxes to go to congregation-affiliated troops or friends of the church troops. The boxes contain new dental supplies, lots of candy and snacks, baby wipes (it is hot and dry in both countries) and lip balm.
We have also raised over $300 for international phone cards to help pay for calls home.
A few boxes were mailed on September 7th and the troops have already received them and expressed their gratitude through the son of Kathie Shively, a member of Good Shepherd. The congregation has decided that this will be an ongoing program and boxes will be sent quarterly.

"Ride the Arc" submitted by Rev. Bob Lawrence

Community of Hope UCC in Tulsa, OK was blessed to have Danielle Girdano speak to us in our Sep. 5th evening worship service about the passion behind her still-in-progress 5,000-mile bicycle ride through the heartland.
Danielle is riding 5,000 miles zig-zagging through the heartland from Minneapolis to Dallas and spent Labor Day weekend in Tulsa. The route she has chosen has been attempted by dozens before her, some of whom died trying to complete the route. Danielle will be the first woman to have completed this route.
The purpose of her ride is to raise awareness of issues of equality for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Youth (GLBTQ), with a special focus on the high incidence of teen suicide among GLBTQ youth.
She is calling her project "Ride the Arc", which is based upon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's statement that "...the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
Danielle will be completing her ride on September 18 by asking people in Dallas to join her for the final 10 miles of her ride. For more information on this project, visit www.ridethearc.org, or follow her on facebook at "Ride the Arc".

UCC celebrates 200 years of Global Mission
Here are some activities for a class of most any age to follow in learning about mission history and our evolving theology of mission work:
Begin by showing this very exciting three-minute music video:
Use a projector or computer to show a children's book about mission from 1885, emphasizing the photos and various countries highlighted found here: http://www.archive.org/stream/missionstoriesof00stroiala#page/n5/mode/2upUse the timeline of mission to locate the places in chronological order on a world map. Visit the page http://globalministries.org/mission/missionaries/ that lists our current missionaries and compare by finding on the map the location of these mission sites. Ask the group to talk about what they know about these countries. If there is time, ask the class to discuss the types of assignments the missionaries now have. Why do they seem to be different and more diverse than the jobs the first missionaries were sent to do? [From saving souls then, to humanitarian aide first, then support of growing faith now.] Jan Aerie, Executive Mission Education and Interpretation Wider Church and Global Ministries United Church of Christ 700 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, OH 44115 216 736 3204
