Alice Mann
From the JustHope website:

JustHope's founder and Executive Director, Rev. Leslie Penrose first visited Central America in 1986 and quickly committed to developing a lasting connection with local groups to address poverty and capacity-building. In 1996 after years of country-and-community-hopping throughout Central America, Rev. Penrose and a small group of companions made the decision to create a long-term relationship with a single community in Nicaragua - a community with whom they could wrestle and hope their way into something deeper, something truer, something more mutual; a community who rather than a charity project for them, could become a partner with them in the work of justice.

Across the years the relationship grew and developed as both groups risked moving beyond paternalism to solidarity. And along the way other groups saw what was possible and worked with Rev. Penrose to create their own partnerships of solidarity and hope.

In 2007, Rev. Penrose left her pastoral ministry to pursue the work of creating and nurturing global partnerships full time. And in June of 2007, a small committed core group of people invested their hopes, their hearts, their hands, and their resources in birthing the dream that beyond paternalism, partnership is possible; that beyond colonialism, covenant can thrive; that beyond just the hope of another way is the dream of JustHope: a world interconnected by cross-cultural partnerships of mutuality and trust that are working cooperatively to inspire hope, increase justice, and nurture the common well-being of the world.

Christians for Fair Witness submitted by Rev. Kathy McCallie

I have been invited to go on a trip to Jerusalem because of a connection that I made at our UCC general synod last summer.  I will be gone the last two weeks in August.

I am going with an organization called Christians for Fair Witness.  We will be a group of twelve UCC pastors plus our trip leader.  You can learn more about the organization sponsoring the trip at: www.christianfairwitness.com

As stated in their mission: "Christians for Fair Witness on the Middle East advocates among mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics in North America for fairness in the churches' witness on issues related to the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors."

The conflict in the Middle East between Israelis and Palestinians is complex and heart-wrenching.  I hope to be able to bring back to our community new awareness about the problems and potential paths to peace. No doubt the trip will enhance my understanding of the biblical stories and my faith.

Visiting Jerusalem is like a dream come true.  No words can express my gratitude for this opportunity.  I am going with a passion for learning and bringing back all the insight and discovery I can share. Please pray for me on these travels.

Shalom,
Kathy McCallie

View from a German Castle

This was the day we went to stay in a camp overnight in Germany.  On the way we stopped to tour a castle. In the picture above you can see Haley Pooler from our conference, Vanessa Leli from Germany, Makayla Yoning from our conference, Florian, Carl Phillip, and Maximillian, all from Germany sitting on the wall outside the castle.  We were waiting "patiently" for the rest of the group while they were exploring the castle inside and out.  It was a really fun experience to see the castles since we don't have them everywhere here like they do in Germany.

The   picture above is one of the beautiful coutryside views from up in the castle. This was just one of our many great days in Germany and France!

 2010 Regional Youth Event Recap

Alice Mann

The 2010 Regional Youth Event was a very spiritual and educational event. Not only did I have a wonderful time meeting other youth with similar beliefs and morals, but I had a great time learning about God's will and how to worship him in new ways.

I went to three workshops while I was there, my favorite and most educational one being a workshop on Relationships and Ethics. This workshop helped me think about and learn what a healthy relationship is and how to apply my morals and ethics to any relationship I am envolved in.

Another workshop I enjoyed was a workshop on Praying in Color; a way to pray that helps you focus and have fun praying at the same time. This is great for people with short attention spans and busy minds such as myself.

Overall RYE was a wonderful experience that I am very glad I was able to attend and hope to attend again in the future
.
