Disaster Relief Recognition Day - August 22, 2010

Members of Florida's 100 UCC churches will gather for beach-side worship Sunday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. to celebrate and reflect how individuals can play - and are playing - a role in protecting the Gulf of Mexico devastated by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

This will be a time of reflection as well as encouragement, as we recall our responsibility to be stewards of God's creation,  Representatives from the UCC's national staff also will attend.

The Florida churches also are asking UCC congregations across the country to join in prayerful solidarity on the same day. Throughout the United States, congregations are asked to lift up "Disaster Relief Recognition Day" as a sign of support for those affected by the Gulf disaster.

The worship service hopes to address five expressed concerns: to identify and claim the church's source of all hope, to demonstrate the widespread concern of all UCC members, to declare the UCC's commitment to long-term recovery, to respond to people's anger and depression, and to strengthen resolve to end our dependence on oil.

Florence Coppola, the UCC's national disaster recovery coordinator, is encouraging UCC churches across the country to get involved and to send stories and photos of churches' creative support to coppolaf@ucc.org.

"We want to encourage all of our churches in the U.S. to do some type of worship event on the same day and to let us know what you did to express your support for those affected in and along the Gulf of Mexico," Coppola said.

Click here for the order of worship for the Aug. 22 beach service is being made available early to assist churches nationwide who can utilize elements in their worship planning for the day. A special hymn for the occasion, O Gracious Maker, has been written by John H. Danner.

Child Sponsorship Appeal

Dear Friends:

Each year, through the Child Sponsorship Appeal, Global Ministries requests special gifts to assist in the overall support of the program.  Your gift of any size will make a huge difference to help continue this important work and will allow Global Ministries to continue allocating 100% of sponsorship amounts
                           to support the sponsored child.

To make a gift online or by check to the Child Sponsorship Program:  http://globalministries.org/get-involved/special-giving-opportunities/

Global Ministries is in the life-changing business, but it somehow seems most important when we're able to change a life by giving hope and opening new opportunities for children.  Child Sponsorship does just that in 15 locations around the world.  A gift of $30 a month helps improve the education and health of a specific child, often creating possibilities for that child's life that wouldn't be possible without this program.

There's a proverb in several cultures that says when you educate a girl you educate a community.  This proverb is illustrated in Dumaguete City in the Philippines, where children who participated in the Kalauman Child Sponsorship Center have gone on to higher education and have come back to be teachers, thus raising the literacy and well-being of the whole community.

To learn more about how you can become a part of this life-changing program, please go to: http://globalministries.org/get-involved/child-sponsorship/ or contact Linda Lawrence, Program Manager, at LawrenceL@ucc.org or toll-free (866) 822-8224, extension 3222.

From Anger to Forgiveness:
National Expert To Share Tips on Anger Management

August 17, 2010

6 - 9 p.m.

First Congregational Church
  1701 SW Collins Ave.
Topeka, KS

TOPEKA - In sweltering heat, challenged by a tough economy where many work longer hours for less pay, anger in all its incarnations - from minor irritants to rage - is a factor in our lives.

Dr. Ilana H. Oren, a licensed therapist, will steer participants at an upcoming workshop through the morass of anger, identifying anger styles (sneaky? shame-based? avoidance?), taking a temper test and then determining healthy ways to handle anger.

Oren, of Tempe, Ariz., is a licensed marriage and family therapist. Her workshop, "From Anger to Forgiveness," delves into the very natural human experience of being angry. Workshop participants will learn to recognize beliefs that fuel anger, and then become familiar with steps they can take to decrease the power anger has in their lives.

"They will gain the ability to evaluate their own anger style, they will reflect on some of their family patterns when it comes to the expression of anger, and they will realize that the forgiveness journey is as process that starts with a decision, with a choice, to forgive," said Oren of her workshop topics. "This choice is derived from the inner evaluation of life circumstances, as well as the conviction that it's Christ's will in their lives."

The workshop, which is Aug. 17, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., includes a breakout session of small groups where participants can delve into their own beliefs and processes for dealing with anger.

Dinner is included for a nominal cost, but the workshop itself is free and open to the public. Continuing Education Credits are available.

Please register in advance of the workshop by calling First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave., at (785) 233-1786.
