Last Blast Camp!
We are half way to the goal of 40 campers! |
Develop a relationship with God,
Strengthen the Youth,
Strengthen the Church,
Make New Life Long Friends,
Positive Character Development,
Build Self-esteem,
Learn New Things,
Fun Activities,
A Chance to Be Yourself,
Good Food,
Give Parents a Break,
Make a Difference in the Life of a Child.
My goal for Last Blast Camp August 2nd - 6th is to get 40+ campers.
My challenge to churches is to send as many kids to camp as possible. Send grandchildren, all the children from church that are old enough (3rd - 12th grade), their children's friends, and the neighborhood kids to camp. Camp is for everyone and God's love is for everyone. Find someone in your community that needs camp and send them to Last Blast Camp. Let's share some love this summer and send as many children as we can!

LEADERSHIP SUMMIT - On Saturday, August 7 the current members of the Conference Council and the Personnel Committee as well as the members from the last three years will be gathering for a Leadership Summit. The time will be led by Rev. Jane Heckles and Rev. Krista Betz. Some of you may remember Jane as she provided support and consultation from the national setting of the UCC during recent years as the Conference was faced with a variety of challenges. The Leadership Summit will provide an opportunity to reflect on those times now that we have traveled a bit more down the road. The hope is not to replay the past, but to be open to new learnings and commitments because of those challenging times. In addition, the hope is to come together in new ways as we head into God's future with confidence and anticipation for what is yet to be. We ask that the wider conference hold its leadership in prayer during this day. Reports or reflections from the summit will be shared with the conference at the annual meeting.

CLERGY BOUNDARY TRAINING
WHEN: Thursday, September 30, 2:30pm to 5:00pm and Friday, October 1, 9:00am to 11:30am (you must attend both sessions for the entire time in order to receive certificate of completion)
WHERE: Marriott Hotel, Wichita, KS
WHAT IS BOUNDARY TRAINING? Boundary Training is a 5 hour workshop designed to engage clergy in critical thinking around topics including power, personal relationships, gifts, leadership in the church, intimacy, safe touch, counseling, stress management, and self-care. It is not designed to provide right and wrong answers. It is designed to help each individual engage in critical thinking around assessing and evaluating the situations we often encounter as clergy.
WHY IS BOUNDARY TRAINING REQUIRED? HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT ME? The Associations of the Conference recognize the importance of on-going development regarding self-reflective skills to engage the ever changing nature of boundaries within our church, community, and personal lives. Through developing these self-reflective skills, a person is better equipped to successfully navigate the challenging boundary issues often faced in ministry.
IS THIS A RESPONSE TO SEXUAL IMPROPRIETY WITHIN THE CHURCH? Yes and no. While there has been enough significant sexual misconduct to warrant serious contemplation of sexual boundaries, by no means does it end there. There are many important topics addressed in the workshop. Most importantly the workshop addresses environments that are conducive to inappropriate boundary crossing, as well as environments that help promote healthy relationships.
WHAT IS GOING TO BE EXPECTED OF ME WHEN I SHOW UP? Participation. This is not a lecture format where the facilitator has all the answers. Your input and expertise is highly valued and important for broadening the scope of the conversation.
WHO IS THE FACILITATOR? Rev. Dr. Dane Sommer is the Director of Chaplaincy Services at the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. He is a UCC minister who is active in ethics committees in hospital and conference settings.
HOW OFTEN IS THIS REQUIRED? Each Association has taken the action to require it every three years.
WHAT IF I AM UNABLE TO ATTEND THESE DATES? Working through your Committee on Ministry, you may take boundary training with another denomination or through a local seminary. A copy of the certificate or letter recording your participation in the workshop signed by the trainer or sponsoring agency should then be sent to your association's Committee on Ministry and Conference Office for their files.
IF I'M RETIRED, DO I HAVE TO ATTEND? Yes, even retired pastors have to be current with their boundary training. Anyone who is acting as an authorized minister of the United Church of Christ is expected to attend. Retired ministers who wish to be exempt from the boundary training requirement must sign an exemption form stating they will not perform any functions as a minister (weddings, baptisms, sermons, representation on a committee as a minister, etc).
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHOOSE NOT TO ATTEND THE TRAINING? If you choose to ignore boundary training, your Association's Committee on Ministry will terminate your authorization for ministry in the United Church of Christ. This is due to the liability factors involved if someone is authorized without having engaged this important material. |
