BIBLICAL SELF-DEFENSE: Training for Trainers
BIBLICAL SELF-DEFENSE: Training for Trainers, was held at Niles Congregational UCC Church, Fremont, CA, June 4-6. Rev. Loyce Newton Edwards, M. Div., Retired Clergy '09 attended this session and has submitted this report.
Co-Sponsors: The UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns, Youth and Young Adult Program, Timothy J. Brown, Commissioned Minister: Erik J. Koepnick, Chicago Theological Seminary; & The UCC Nevada-Northern California Conference.
About a dozen UCC'ers from around the country, both clergy and laity, advocates for LGBT justice and equality, gathered the first week-end in June for this enlightening training event. The purpose for the course, as described by the course facilitators:
"Too often, the religious right misuses a few passages from the Bible to justify the oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Too often, young people (and adults) do not know how to respond to these texts or what they really mean and their contexts. As a result, any conversation with the religious right, be it in person or in society, can become an invitation to an LGBT person to feel poorly about themselves, or to a straight person to view an LGBT person as inferior. The "Biblical Self-Defense" workshop analyzes each of the so-called 'slammer passages' in detail, removing the fear they sometimes can instill."
As a teen, I remember the bullying/taunting of my older Transgender, beloved brother to sister, LaVonn, from our school and neighborhood peers. Although that happened in OKC in the late 1950's, unfortunately that same kind of "bullying," still exists today. Enough already! My personal commitment to, and passion for advocacy on behalf of my sisters and brothers in the wider world, God's Beloved Community, as envisioned by the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. motivates me to do what I can to challenge and dismantle homophobia, which has deep roots in "erroneous" Bible based teachings. LaVonn passed away in 1999, complications of AIDS, and my advocacy honors her life and memories.
The 4 areas of facilitator competences emphasized during this training session included:
Readiness Abilities Willingness Awareness
To date, there are more than 120 translations of the Bible into English. I believe that NONE of us are free until ALL of us are free, and that includes our Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender sisters and brothers. We are both challenged and rewarded to view the Bible through a "justice/equality," lens.
Two of the most highly recommended, but also required readings for the workshop included: Biblical Self Defense Workbook, Compiled by the Youth and Young Adult Program of the UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns, and What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality, by Daniel A. Helminiak.
I would love to share some of this workshop information with local churches, by invitation, or with the wider KOC-UCC.
You can contact me: loycee@sbcglobal.net or 405 642-0124.

ECUMENICAL NEWS & RESOURCE
Later this month the General Council of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) will meet in Grand Rapids , Michigan , June 18-26. WARC, an ecumenical body to which the UCC belongs, is a fellowship of 215 denominations from around the world with about 75 million members. Every 6 or 7 years, WARC meets in a different region of the world for worship, witness, Bible study and business. The UCC will be present through a delegation, authorized by the Executive Council, as well as a variety of visitors, and we will look forward to sharing news of the meeting after it concludes at the end of the month. [For more information about WARC and its work, you can go to www.warc.ch.] Though much of the work of WARC in the last several years has focused on issues of global economic justice and the intersection between mission and unity, this year a part of the business will include the formation an ecumenical "merger" - the union of WARC with another Reformed ecumenical body called the Reformed Ecumenical Council. Attached is the English language text of the service of worship which will be used on Sunday, June 20, when that union is recognized. The liturgy includes prayers and songs from many parts of the world. We encourage congregations to us portions of it in their own worship services on June 20 (or any time!).

Submit Your Mission Stories
It is time to share your mission stories for the "Calendar of Prayer." Please send via e-mail your submissions to Jan Aerie aeriej@ucc.org for this daily guided prayer resource. This resource has been used by individuals and local UCC congregations for over 70 years. It began by lifting up the missionary personnel of the denomination. The "Calendar of Prayer" is a unique offering to the church, lifting up the mission stories of local congregations, conferences, associations and the national settings of the church. We are invited and encouraged to remember and pray for these ministry outreaches daily. This is an opportunity for you to share your experiences and passions in print with others. Please send short (200 words) stories and links for stories to Jan no later than June 21.

Elaine Blanchard: Storyteller, Retreat Leader
and Public Speaker

Remember when we sat on the porch in the evenings and talked about our day? Remember when the kids caught fireflies on the front lawn and we watched the stars come out over our heads while we told stories and laughed at ourselves? We developed a sense of community on the porch and in our swing. We learned to trust each other as we let go of the day's light and relaxed into the night.
Elaine Blanchard's stories take us to that place where we can trust ourselves and each other again.
You won't want to miss this.

Believe Out Loud Power Summit October 9-11, 2010 Orlando, FL
The UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns in partnership with the UCC Health and Wholeness Advocacy Office are writing to share about an exciting advanced leadership training opportunity and to ask for your help and support. The advanced training called the Believe Out Loud Power Summit will gather around 500 leaders and will focus on living into the values of extravagant welcome known in the United Church of Christ as Open and Affirming (ONA). It will take place October 9-11, 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel in Orlando , Florida . The Believe Out Loud Power Summit is an ecumenical event which is being planned by Welcoming Church Program Leaders of the Institute for Welcoming Resources. This advanced training is for local, regional and national leaders in the welcoming church movement, such as, Conference Ministers and Program Staff who support Open and Affirming (ONA) ministry, ONA Consultants, members of Conference ONA Committees, local church ONA leaders and other leaders engaged in faith-based or other pro-LGBT advocacy. Participants in the summit will not only strengthen their skills for ONA leadership in the UCC, but also leadership skills that can be applied to other areas of mission and ministry. Concrete skills building workshops will include leadership development, cultural competency for working in diverse cultural settings, designing healthy church processes, navigating conflict, effective communication, media training, and public policy advocacy. The curriculum of the training program will address such questions as, "How can I be a helpful resource to local churches with their ONA process?" "We're ONA, now what?" and "What are we going to do about the LGBT related measure on the ballot in the next election?" The program will also include: · MovementBuilding - where we are, and what this particular moment in history needs from the welcoming faith movement. · The crucial intersections of pro-LGBT faith work and racial justice · The latest research on the welcoming faith movement and the wider Church · Advanced Biblical study · Powerful worship and inspiring preaching · Transgender Inclusion 201/301 · Advanced community organizing and mobilizing techniques · How to activate congregations to secular political action · Building stronger organizations through the development of volunteers, leadership, and boards There are no registration or program fees for the Believe Out Loud Power Summit because of a generous grant from the Haas Jr. Foundation. However costs for travel, accommodations, meals and other related expenses are not included. The UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns and the UCC Health and Wholeness Advocacy Office have very limited funds, but, we are exploring ways to partner with others to support the expenses of getting a strong UCC contingent to the event. We estimate the average cost, including air fare, accommodations, meals and ground transportation will be $910.00. This could be more or less, depending on the actual air fare and number of hotel nights. Believe Out Loud Power Summit Travel Expense Estimate: $300 Air Fare $400 Hotel @ $119/night for 3 nights, plus 12.5% tax $150 Meals @ $50/day for 3 days $ 60 Ground Transportation @ $30 one way $910 Estimated Average Travel Cost The Health and Wholeness Advocacy Office and The Coalition began partnering to provide trainings for Open and Affirming leadership in 2006. Since 2008 we joined with the welcoming church programs a several other main line denominations and now there are more than 12 trainings per year across the country. More than 60 UCC people have received training through this program. We are eager to continue to develop their leadership and add to their numbers. The Believe Out Loud Power Summit is an excellent opportunity to do just that.
