Progressive Renewal, a webinar -- May 11 at 2pm

Please join the Center for Progressive Renewal Tuesday, May 11, at 2 p.m. ET for Progressive Renewal, a webinar with co-Executive Director Rev. Michael Piazza.
Rev. Piazza will offer the workshop that has inspired hundreds of pastors to reclaim the label "liberal" as a badge of honor. This lesson in niche marketing calls on progressive congregations to focus their resources more effectively. Drawing on sociological changes in America, Rev. Piazza believes that the progressive movement could be awakening to genuine revival, and that our churches can be a part of that cultural renewal. This webinar will help us discover how our churches can find new life in our changing society.

Also, don't forget that popular workshop leader and retreat facilitator Gwen Smith returns on Wednesday, May 26 with Coping Tips for Tough Times to offer simple, practical tips to help us cope with the reality of financial hardship and personal loss.

For more information and to register for these and other webinars, please visit www.progressiverenewal.org and click on "Events."
Blessings,

STRENGTHEN THE CHURCH:  SPREAD THE LOVE

On Pentecost Sunday, May 23 congregations are encouraged to receive a Strengthen the Church offering.

This is one of four special mission offerings within the United Church of Christ and grows the UCC's future.

Fifty percent of the offering is passed on to the national setting for:

* funding new church starts and invigorating existing congregations,

* nurturing lay and pastoral leadership

* building youth and young adult ministries

* supporting the God is Still Speaking ministry and its extravagant welcome for all within the United Church of Christ.

Fifty percent of the offering remains in the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference to support the ministry of the Justice and Witness Commission and to create a fund administered by the conference minister for special "strengthen the church" projects identified throughout the year.

This year you will notice in the promotional materials that one of our very own Kansas-Oklahoma Conference congregations is highlighted-Plymouth Congregation United Church of Christ and its new church start, Reunion Libertad in Lawrence, KS.  Reunion Libertad is a new ministry birthed out of Plymouth's desire to welcome Spanish-speaking persons in Lawrence to come and be "centered in their own journeys of faith and liberation."  Free English classes, with free child care, create a bridge across cultural and language barriers as English-speaking volunteers serve as conversation partners.  With a little help from Strengthen the Church, the congregation has become known as a safe and warm place where God is still speaking.

Letter of Appreciation Received for White Memorial Camp

The Council Grove Conference was held in April, 2010 at White Memorial Camp with 120 to 150 people attending on any given day.  Recently a letter was received from Genevieve Hangen, the conference leader.  In it she described the "wonderful experience" the group had this year as well as the feeling that when she entered camp she "could feel things had transformed."

She complimented Sara and her staff for planning ahead to meet the needs of their group; especially with their special food needs.  She commented, "They created a salad bar that included choices so that people who ate only a vegan diet or who could not eat gluten would always be able to have a complete and healthy meal.  They created fresh, nutritious meals for our conference and the participants were delighted with the quality and presentation of the food."

She commented on the Internet café next to the camp office and the clean fresh paint making the entire facility feel warm and welcoming!

And of even more impact, she commented on the way the WMC staff worked together saying "this group has come together in a way that is powerful, productive, and of service.  If the goal of the Ministries Committee is to create a retreat center that is a ministry for both the people who come for retreat and for those who work there, I believe that Sara Shaw has met this goal."

Congratulations to Sara and her staff!   There's a saying among us  in Outdoor Ministries, "if you have a successful Council Grove Conference you know you're ready for the busy summer season!"

White Memorial Camp and Conference Center is more than ready for all of us!  Come and see!!

Things needed before or for summer camp:

A few good volunteers to help May 3 - 8 on painting and working on the pool, any help is appreciated including helping for a day, the whole week, or sending money for pool supplies.
Those who have adopted the smaller cabins we are slowly repainting these and making repairs.  I would like some input on these following things: interior colors for the main room and bedrooms, what if any monies are available through your church for repair supplies, and is there an interest in your church to help with painting and repairs.

JD will be back at camp volunteering from May 21 - May 25th he will be working on the basement, pool bathrooms, and finishing up little red.  To date JD has done all the work himself and is in dire need of some assistance, if you can please come help for a day or more.  (If you or anyone is planning to help on these work days please let me know so we can have enough food for everyone.)
I am still looking for 4 churches who would be interested in adopting Big Red.  If you are interested please contact the camp.

A special White Memorial Camp THANK YOU to Jancy Pettit, FCC, Topeka, Jan Ash, FCC, Topeka,  Robin Goff, Founder of The Light Center, Baldwin , Berengere (Bee) Cusin, who was visiting Robin from California for volunteering to help at with CGC Conference.
