"A Feast of Performance and Presentation"

How to understand the Bible using storytelling will be the theme of a public presentation by two Phillips Theological Seminary professors. Dennis Smith, LaDonna Kramer Meinders Professor of New Testament, and Barbara McBride-Smith, Adjunct Instructor in Storytelling, will collaborate in a series of workshops and performances. Smith is editor of several volumes in the series Storyteller's Companion to the Bible.  McBride-Smith is a nationally renowned professional storyteller.

"Story Matters: Story and Theology in the Bible and Today - A Feast of Performance and Presentation" is the title of the event which will be held April 16-17 at Pine Valley Christian Church in Wichita, Kansas.

"In the Beginning was the Story ... A Storytelling Concert" kicks off the two-day event. Scheduled for Friday, April 16 from 7-8:30 p.m., Barbara McBride-Smith will make you laugh, cry, reminisce, and sit back in awe - all at the same time. Known for her down-home, Texas-style take on Bible stories, Greek myths, and the mythic figures from her childhood in Waco, Texas, McBride-Smith is a regular performer at the annual National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

On Saturday, April 17, Dennis Smith will join Barbara in presenting "Story Matters: What Do Abraham, Sarah, Baucis, Philemon, Jesus, and Paul Have in Common?" from 9-11:30 a.m.

"Sometimes we relegate Bible stories to the category of children's literature, as if to indicate they are less important. But the Bible itself utilized stories for conveying very complex theological ideas," said Dennis. "In this workshop, we will explore a set of stories from both the Bible and its culture that gave birth to the core Christian concept of grace. The presentation will feature a performance of "Baucis and Philemon" by Barbara," he added.

ix.     to work toward encouraging every UCC congregation to be committed to
compassionate action and widening the welcome for all.

Urge the President to lift the blockade and
help Gazan families in need.

Rev. Geoffrey Black and other heads of denomination recently signed a letter to President Obama urging Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza and its 1.4 million residents.  The blockade, which began in 2007, has just passed the 1,000 day milestone and continues to have widespread adverse humanitarian and social effects.

Tragically, 70% of Gazans live on $1 per day. Sanitation facilities have been damaged and raw sewage flows into the sea.  Some drinking water is contaminated. Unemployment is soaring towards 40% and , according to the UN, 11% of the children are malnourished.  As many as 20,000 homes and many schools were damaged or destroyed and have not been rebuilt due to import restrictions.  Many students lack basic school supplies.

children of Gaza

The situation in Gaza remains dire and the time has come for the President to persuade Israel to lift the closure of its border to preserve basic livelihoods and kindle hope for a better future among Gazan youth.

The heads of denomination letter and petition are being coordinated by Churches for Middle East Peace, an organization of which the United Church of Christ is a member.

The ONA process began on a national level in 1985 when the Fifteenth General Synod adopted the resolution, Calling on United Church of Christ Congregations to Declare Themselves Open and Affirming.

The Planning Committee for National Gathering hopes that each ONA congregation will send at least one delegate to San Diego to join in celebrating this milestone. Come to reconnect with friends from across the country or to meet new ones. Come and experience the deep, meaningful worship services. Come and learn how to be a better advocate, steps you can take to encourage other congregations in your area to consider the ONA process and things your church can do to more fully live out God's extravagant welcome.

Come and celebrate the United Church of Christ's commitment to the inclusion of all God's children at God's table.
