Dear SB Readers:
We ended April with the arrival of our advance copies of The Maps of Antietam. The printing is complete, the books are loaded on the boat, and are now making their was across the ocean as I finish up this newsletter. Once they reach the U.S., they will go through customs and be sent to our warehouses, and then on to you. It's been quite a wait, but well worth it. The book looks fabulous! Check our website regularly for final release updates.

In Production
Hundreds of men followed Colonel Benedict Arnold northward on his famous expedition to join with General Richard Montgomery and capture Quebec in late December 1775. Arnold's troops, however, continued fighting after Arnold fell wounded and only surrendered when hopelessly outnumbered and trapped inside the city. Who were these men and what became of them? Arthur Lefkowitz answers these questions in his fresh and compelling Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes: The Lives of the Extraordinary Patriots who followed Arnold to Canada at the start of the American Revolution.
An award-winning writer on the American Revolution, Lefkowitz spent years searching through archival materials to paint splendid and compelling portraits of Arnold's amazing cast of veterans whose fates offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of early American patriots. His original monograph begins with an overview of the failed Canadian invasion before following these men into prison (where some devised intricate plots to break out and even seize weapons to capture the city). Despite their hardships, many returned to the rebel army to continue their fight for independence.

New Market Battlefield Anniversary
This year marks the 148th anniversary of the Battle of New Market and New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is the site of the oldest annual battle reenactment in the nation, which will take place on May 19-20, 2012 at the battlefield.
The Battle of New Market was one of nearly 400 significant battles that took place during the Civil War, which occurred from 1861 -1865, and one of several battles fought in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
The conflict took place on May 15, 1864, and included 6,275 Union soldiers under the command of Franz Sigel and 4,090 Confederate troops under the command of John C. Breckinridge. More than 250 Virginia Military Institute cadets also fought in the battle on the Confederate side.
In drenching rain, the soldiers and cadets met on the New Market Battlefield, which was then an orchard and wheat field. As they trudged through the soggy field, many of the men lost their shoes in the mud. As a result, the battlefield became known as the "Field of Lost Shoes."
Charles R. Knight's Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market and the Opening of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, May 1864 is the first full-length account in more than three decades to examine the combat at New Market on May 15, 1864. Based upon years of primary research and a firsthand appreciation of the battlefield terrain, Knight's balanced and objective approach includes a detailed examination of the complex prelude leading up to the day of battle. For an inside look at the making of Valley Thunder, read Charlie's interview with Savas Beatie.
Order Valley Thunder by May 31, 2012 and receive 10% off the retail price of $29.95. All orders ship with an autographed bookplate from the author. |

Now Under Contract . . .
The Battle of Big Bethel: Crucial Clash in Early Civil War Virginia by J. Michael Cobb, Ed Hicks, and Wythe Holt is the first full-length treatment of the small but consequential June 1861 battle that reshaped both Northern and Southern perceptions about what lay in store for the divided nation. In the spring of 1861, many people in the North and South imagined that the Civil War would be short and nearly bloodless. The first planned engagement of the war at Big Bethel, however, provided undeniable evidence of just how wrong popular opinion could be.
