Spring 2012 Releases

This month, we continue our Spring 2012 preview with The Iron Brigade in the Civil War and German Ground Forces of World War II. Continue to check our website for updated release dates plus author interviews, sneak peek excerpts, and more.

PetersburgThe Iron Brigade in the Civil War: Bull Run to Appomattox, 1861 - 1865, by Lance J. Herdegen 6x9 hardcover, 68 b/w photos, 15 maps, 624 pages, $39.95

The Iron Brigade is one of the most celebrated military organizations of the American Civil War. Although it is primarily known (and studied) because of its remarkable stand on the first bloody day at Gettysburg, its stellar service from the earliest days of the war all the way to Appomattox Court House is routinely ignored. That stunning oversight is finally rectified by Herdegen's The Iron Brigade in the Civil War, the first book-length account of this legendary combat unit from Bull Run to the grand march up Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. German Ground Forces of World War II: Complete Orders of Battle for Army Groups, Armies, Army Corps, and Other Commands of the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS, September 1, 1939 - May 8, 1945, by William T. McCroden and Thomas E. Nutter; 7x10 hardcover, 6 b/w photos, maps, 624 pages, $45.00

German Ground Forces of World War II offers the first comprehensive order of battle for German ground troops throughout the Second World War, from the invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, to the destruction of the last remnants of Germany's Wehrmacht and Waffen SS in Berlin in 1945. Unlike similar works, these orders of battle are dynamic, and so account for the continuously changing character of Germany's ground forces at war. Read more

The National Guard

PetersburgWhat is a few years younger than the Mayflower Compact (1620); a lot older than the Declaration of Independence (1776) and U.S. Constitution (1787); pre-dates the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps by 139 years; and is 311 years older than the Air Force? If you answered the National Guard, you are correct.

Known originally as the militia, the National Guard turns 375 years young December 13, 2011. It all started in 1636 when the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which functioned as the colony's legislature, ordered existing militia companies from the towns surrounding Boston to form three regiments: North, South, and East.

While other English colonies like Virginia and Spanish colonies like Florida and Puerto Rico had individual towns with militia companies before 1636, Massachusetts was the first place in the New World where the population was large enough to justify organizing companies into regiments for command and control.

Today, America's 365,000+ National Guardsmen and their family members live and work as civilians in nearly 3,000 communities across the United States and her territories, and fight abroad in the defense of our country.

Celebrate the National Guard's birthday this month by purchasing National Guard 101: A Handbook for Spouses by Mary Corbett. This unique book covers a broad range of topics, from practical knowledge about the history of the National Guard and understanding rank to softer subjects like social life in the Guard and family programs.

Place your order for National Guard 101: A Handbook for Spouses by December 28, 2011 and receive 10% off the original retail price of $18.95. Use code NG2011 when placing your order. Note: Orders placed through our website using PayPal will be issued a refund after the order is processed.

Meet Bruce Allardice

PetersburgBruce Allardice is considered, in the words of historian Ed Cotham, "one of the finest researchers in the field." Bruce will be working closely with Savas Beatie during 2012 on our new digital project: The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Final Official Reports Filed by Union Civil War Generals. As co-editor of the project, Bruce will be reading all of the generals' reports and provide a one-page summary for each.

A tenured professor of history at South Suburban College, Allardice is past president of the Northern Illinois Civil War Round Table, and past president of the Civil War Round Table of Chicago. A lifelong Chicago area resident and long-suffering White Sox fan, Mr. Allardice has authored or co-authored six books, and numerous articles on the Civil War, including Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables (Hill College, 2002). His More Generals in Gray (LSU Press 1995) was a selection of the History Book Club. He is currently working on editing the diary of Charles F. Gunther, a Confederate steamboat officer who later became Chicago's leading candymaker.

Visit Bruce's author spotlight on our website to read his full biography or visit his website to stay up-to-date on all of his current projects and events.
