FREE book treasure hunt - see below for details! |
Dear Reader,
Ignore what Veronica wrote below. She is dreaming. On Game Day she will be begging to trade for some of my players. I mean, come on. She is a Steeler's fan, for crying out loud. We hired her anyway.
Charlie Knight, author of the recently released Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market published an outstanding article in this month's Hallowed Ground, the magazine of the Civil War Preservation Trust. If you like good, nitty-gritty, well-illustrated and mapped battle histories, you will love Valley Thunder, which is also a selection of the History and Military book clubs. Congratulations, Charlie! And if you want to help preserve Civil War battlefields, use the code CWPT when ordering ANY of our titles, and 10% of your purchase price will be directly donated to the trust. A win-win all the way around.
We would like to introduce you to Helene Dodier (not a Steeler's fan), who is our new Backlist Manager. Helene will be managing our growing list of titles. Scroll down to read more about Helene, and feel free to welcome her aboard.
"From the Desk of . . ." offers another slice of life from the perspective of Rachel, our intern this summer. She is learning a lot and we are enjoying having her here. She leaves next month to start college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. We will hate to see her leave.
A real milestone: Mollie Gross' Confessions of a Military Wife has 103 reviews on Amazon, and ALL of them are FIVE STAR. Frankly, we have never seen anything like it. You authors reading this know how nearly impossible that is to achieve. Know someone in the military? This is the perfect gift - hilarious, helpful, and a pure delight to read. But it is NOT G-rated, so put a brown paper bag around it if children are near.
There is so much in the news and cooking on the stove I can't begin to scratch the surface, so I would encourage you to scroll down and spend a few minutes reading, click a few links and enjoy a bit more, and enjoy the balance of your fading summer.
As always, thanks for your support. We look forward to publishing what you are seeking to read, enjoy, and own for a lifetime.

Follow the Clues to a FREE Book
A Savas Beatie treasure hunt is what we have for you this month. Here's how it works:
- Buried on our Civil War book pages are 7 random letters (front pages only).
- Find all 7 letters to spell out one word in one of our Civil War titles.
- Send your answer to veronica@savasbeatie.com by August 27, 2010. Correct entries will be entered into our monthly drawing for a copy of Civil War Regiments, Vol. 6, No. 3: Gettysburg Regimental Leadership and Command.
To get you started, you'll find your first letter on The Maryland Campaign page. Remember, all of our Civil War titles are in play, even our Fall 2010 titles. Good Luck!
*********************************************************************************
Thank you for all of the responses to my last request for book ideas. We received some very enthusiastic suggestions from our readers including:
- Civil War logistics
- United States military railroads and differences between the Union and Confederacy lines
- The Atlanta Campaign
All of the responses we received were forwarded to our managing director, Ted Savas, who will take them into consideration for future publishing decisions. Be sure to check back here for updates. Unfortunately, we can only give away one free book a month, and this one goes to Sue S. who would enjoy reading about personal stories from The Battle of Britian or the retreat from Dunkirk.
Be sure to check future editions of Libri Novus for more offers and contests. |

Charlie Knight and Hallowed Ground
The Summer 2010 edition of The Civil War Preservation Trust's Hallowed Ground features a 17-page spread on Charlie Knight's newly released Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market. Included in the magazine's feature spread is a book synopsis by Charlie, color photos and action maps, special callouts depicting VMI Cadet life in the Civil War, and an interview with Charlie Knight. Visit CWPT's website to read the complete article.
"Valley Thunder surely takes its place now among the dozen finest and most complete accounts of any Civil War action, and it would be hard to name any account of a secondary fight of this size that has been better treated. Knight's study is a contribution not just to Virginia or Confederate literature, but a book that will serve the entire Civil War community for generations to come, and probably much longer than my thirty-six years. The only way we will get a better account is if Breckinridge and the others come to life and give it to us from their own lips."
- William C. Davis, former editor of Civil War Times, Illustrated, author of The Battle of New Market (1975), and the award-winning author of Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour We're featuring Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market as our book of the month, and offering $5.00 off and free priority mail shipping if you place your order by August 31, 2010. Use code THUNDER to receive this special offer. (Orders placed through PAYPAL will be issued a refund after the order is processed.) |
What Time Is It?
When I came up for the title to this article, my mind was filled with childhood games I could adapt for my 6-year-old's upcoming soccer practices to keep the kids moving as much as possible while learning to dribble the ball, sans hands. Yes, I'm the coach this year, and I'm dating myself, but that's another story, and this article is definitely not about soccer, or when Mr. Wolf is coming to dinner. "What's up with the title then?", you might ask. Well, it's August, and in my world for the next six+ months, that means football season, a passion of mine as well as a weekend ritual. A diehard Steelers and Penn State fan, I wear my colors with pride on game day, and root on my teams, win or lose -- if you doubt this girl's obsession, just ask Ted. He was so interested in my fantasy football stats last year, that he has decided to join our leage this season. Oh, I'll give him a few pointers and websites he can browse, but on game day, it's ON. Satisfy your football itch this season by ordering any of our football Sports by the Numbers titles: and receive 10% off and free media mail shipping if you place your order by August 31, 2010 using code FOOTBALL. (Orders placed through PAYPAL will be issued a refund after the order is processed.)
Now, if I can just get a big screen set up on the soccer fields, I'll be in business :). |

New at Savas Beatie: Helene Dodier
Hi, I'm Helene Dodier. I graduated from Sacramento State University in 1994 with a BS in Business, Finance. After several years within the healthcare finance industry, I "retired" to start a family with my husband Pierre and manage our family business. I have now come out of retirement after 13 fullfilling years as a stay-at-home Mom. When I received a call from Veronica telling me there was an opening at Savas Beatie I was thrilled to say the least. I had been searching the job market for something that would appeal to me, but never thought it would be within an industry I am passionate about. As a member of a local bookclub for 13 years, I jumped at the opportunity to work with an independent publisher. When I met Ted and Sarah I knew this would be a great place to work; the light-hearted, casual atmosphere in the office makes it enjoyable to come to work each day.
As the Backlist Manager, I work with a variety of projects and look for creative ways to market our books to specialty book stores, museums, and historical sites. I am proud to be a part of the Savas Beatie team.
I have been in the Folsom, CA area for 16 years. In my spare time I enjoy reading, swimming, and spending time with my husband and three children. I can be reached at helene@savasbeatie.com.
Yours truly, Helene Dodier |

From the Desk of Rachel Savas
It's hard to believe, but July flew by faster than June at the office. They say time flies when you're having fun. I've come to find that this age-old saying also applies to hard work. Or maybe my work at Savas Beatie is actually fun? I never thought I would find myself saying those two words in the same sentence. But, thus far, my internship at Savas Beatie has shown me that work can be fun.
Recently, I've become involved with Nick Popaditch's Congressional run in California's 51st District. A few weeks back, an editorial cartoon was printed in The Imperial Valley Press newspaper mocking the war wounds Nick suffered in service to our country. Nick was blinded by a rocket strike to the head in Fallujah. I was shocked by the newspaper's blatant disregard for decency. Instantly, Sarah had me contacting several radio stations to have Nick talk about the cartoon, the media's treatment of veterans, and why his campaign is important and will play a role in shaping our future. After setting up several important interviews, I felt accomplished. I was contributing to such a significant cause.
Unfortunately, I only have one more month at the office until I leave in the fall. Nevertheless, in the meantime, I will continue to chronicle my experiences at Savas Beatie. Stay tuned!
Yours truly,
Rachel Savas |
