Dear Reader,

The Fourth of July is already behind us (how did that happen?). If it is early July what else is there to think about other than . . . Gettysburg. OK, some of you thought I was going to say swimming, BBQ, baseball, etc. What were you thinking? Two significant Gettysburg-related titles are worth a few bits of digital ink.

"Ted, why is the first book in your Savas Beatie Military Atlas Series in black and white, and the other two in color?" I have been asked that question several times, so this seems as good a place as any to answer it.

First, Brad Gottfried's The Maps of Gettysburg is finally available in full color! Brad's Gettysburg was the inaugural book in the series and was produced in black and white. It promptly sold out and was reprinted several times. It also appeared in two paperback printings, the second of which is also running low. (The paperback is especially good for carrying out on the field, and is easy to write in without feeling too guilty.) We made a decision to switch to full color thereafter, so the second series title (The Maps of First Bull Run, also by Gottfried), and the third (The Maps of Chickamauga, by David Powell and David Friedrichs) came off the line in lovely CMYK on matte-art paper, with a strong sewn binding and heavy black cloth.

When Gottfried's Gettysburg began to run low again, it made sense to go back and reprint it in full color to match the rest of the series. As you know, the dust jackets are very similar for each book in the series (so they match in a nice way), and we changed the Gettysburg color jacket so it matches the series, but is still different than the original jacket. We are pleased that so many people want to own both books, often using the earlier one in the field.

Let us help: We are offering anyone who owns the black and white (whether in paper or hardcover) to simply tell us they own it, and we will deduct $10.00 from the retail price of the new color edition AND throw in a nice, signed author bookplate at no extra charge. And better still, the suggested retail for color is the same as black and white: just $39.95.

Another "first" is also upon us: We are really pleased to announce the recent release of our first audio book, The Complete Gettysburg Guide: Vol. 1: The Battlefield, by J. David Petruzzi and Steve Stanley. Based upon their bestselling book of the same name, the two-disc tour includes a host of cool features, including a full-color booklet inside with Steve's fabulous maps and an 8-page foldout jammed with information and photos! The tour retails for only $22.95, and is a bargain at any price. When you see and test drive it, I'm sure you will agree. (And no, you don't need to be on the field to enjoy this--especially if you have The Complete Gettysburg Guide book.)

Ok, Veronica just told me to offer the audio tour for a cool $17.99 with a signed bookplate by both Petruzzi and Stanley if you mention you saw it here in this newsletter. (And it makes a great gift, too.) Use code COOL when you place your order.

As always, thanks for your support. We look forward to publishing what you are seeking to read, enjoy, and own for a lifetime.

Looking on the board in Ted's office, we can all see what's coming up title-wise for the next year and beyond. What I can tell you now is that we have a mixture of many different historical eras. But we need your ideas too. So this month, we're calling on you to see what new books you'd like to see, and hopefully, then purchase. Maybe you're interested in a particular Civil War battle or general. Maybe it's something on a current military official. Whatever it may be, we're interested, so send us your ideas for a chance to receive a copy of Civil War Regiments, Vol. 5, No. 2: Charleston - Battles and Seacoast Operations in South Carolina.

One winner will be selected from the ideas we receive. Submit your ideas to veronica@savasbeatie.com by July 29 to be included.

A big thank you to all of our readers who sent in votes for their favorite Savas Beatie cover: The Maryland Campaign or Valley Thunder. Comments we received pertaining to each cover include:

The Maryland Campaign

  • " . . . I prefer The Maryland Campaign because of its bright coloring along with the period feel . . ."
  • "I like the use of the older pictures and the typeface."
  • " . . . the faux-antique cover design is a good fit with the vintage battle scene."

Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market

  • "The cover painting makes the action come alive and jump off the page right into my mind."
  • ". . . the drama of the dawn cannonade of Valley Thunder especially since the artillery plays such a critical role in the battle."

It was a tight race, but in the end, The Maryland Campaign won the battle by one. We consider both books winners though and each one is doing tremendously well at many parks and battlefields. maryland campaign coverValley Thunder cover

The Maps of Gettysburg

MOGFC coverThe long-awaited arrival of The Maps of Gettysburg (full-color edition) has finally arrived and doesn't disappoint. The first title in the Savas Beatie Military Atlas series was originally printed in black-and-white, but with the success of future series titles in color, we decided to reprint The Maps of Gettysburg in full color (with a slightly different cover) to match the others. Same great content and analysis, but with maps that jump off the page with the Federals shown in blue and the Confederates in red.

A Military and History book club selection, The Maps of Gettysburg: An Atlas of the Gettysburg Campaign, June 3 - July 13, 1863 plows new ground in the study of the campaign by breaking down the entire campaign in 146 detailed, full-page original and now, color maps. These cartographic creations bore down to the regimental level, offering students of the campaign a unique and fascinating approach to studying what may have been the most climactic battle of the war.

"Brad Gottfried's The Maps of Gettysburg is an essential addition to any Civil War buff's library, maybe the most essential reference book of recent memory. Here is the Gettysburg Campaign from start to finish, with nearly 150 full page original maps, each matched to a clear and concise narrative. This is the book that links together all those other titles sitting on your shelf."

WINNER
The Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award,
for Reference, 2009

by J. David Petruzzi, with cartography by Steven Stanley
(Savas Beatie, 2009)

Amer Revolution jacket"J. David Petruzzi and Steven Stanley's The Complete Gettysburg Guide is the definitive reference book for anyone planning to visit the Gettysburg battlefield," said Matthew Seelinger, the Army Historical Foundation's Chief Historian and Program Coordinator for the Foundation's Distinguished Writing Awards Program.

"To be recognized by the U.S. Army Historical Foundation and to win this award is a great honor," said author J. David Petruzzi. "Our primary goal was to motivate folks to walk the actual grounds traversed by the soldiers and citizens during the Battle of Gettysburg. That the book was recognized as the Reference Book of the Year humbles me greatly. Steve Stanley's beautiful maps, layout and design make the book so easy and enjoyable to use, and we appreciate this honor more than can be expressed in mere words."

by James A. Hessler (Savas Beatie, 2009)

Amer Revolution jacketThe Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award is presented annually to the most original, outstanding work on the Gettysburg Campaign. "[Sickles at Gettysburg] is now the standard work on Sickles," award committee members stated. "Hessler takes a fresh approach to Sickles' role in the battle of Gettysburg that enables readers to make their own determination on his controversial move forward." Furthermore, committee members called the book, "an excellent portrait of a man who was larger than life."

"I know that several excellent Gettysburg books were released last year, so I am truly honored to win this award," said James Hessler. "When I wrote this book, I was not sure that the world would want to read a new Dan Sickles biography, so I continue to be thrilled by the reception and support that this book has gotten from the historical community. Love him or hate him, Dan Sickles is an important part of Gettysburg so his story deserved to be told."

New at Savas Beatie: Rachel Savas

Rachel SavasOn June 3rd, I started working at Savas Beatie and immediately, I knew this wouldn't be just your average internship. I was treated like any other employee and even given my own work space complete with a desk, lamp, and plant. By the end of the first day, I had become acclimated with the environment:  across the hallway, some political radio talk show would always be streaming from Uncle Ted's office; Sarah could be found endlessly typing away, communicating with many authors and affiliates of the company; multiple phone calls come in throughout the day, most answered by Kim; Veronica could be found in her office, working diligently and quietly.  All employees exchanged witty banter throughout the day, making it an enjoyable atmosphere full of both hard work and laughter.

As my first month of work at the company is coming to an end, I have engaged in a wide variety of assignments. I've posted events on the web and managed the company's Facebook and Twitter pages, and blogs. I've communicated with multiple authors and set up several radio interviews. I was even fortunate enough to sit-in on a meeting between Bank of America and Savas Beatie where they discussed an upcoming book they are distributing to the Giants, and possibly several other MLB teams, that will provide educational activities and lessons for youth baseball players.

Working for Savas Beatie has been anything but ordinary, and I cannot wait for what's in store during the next couple months.

Yours truly,

Rachel Savas
