Tour Ends & Festival Begins
|
Greetings!
My tour for The Girl Who Fell From the Sky has finally come to a close and I wanted to say thank you to all of you for your support!
The book continues to find more and more readers. It is now in its 6th printing in paperback! It spent 4 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List and another 4 on the extended list. It has hovered in the Top 20 on the National Indie Bestseller List since its release. It's been an absolute dream come true! |
A Look Back
|
This has been a wonderful ride and I have so many amazing memories from this time. But it's time to settle down and finish the new book. (Yes, there is a new book in the works. And it may or may not be a sequel! :) ) |
Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival
|

I will continue to do readings every once in a while. This summer I will read at Sundance on June 18; Boone, NC on August 16; and at Book Passage in Corte Madera on Aug. 18 where Terry McMillan will interview me for the Algonquin Book Club. (You can always find my updated schedule on my website too.) But the next place you'll see me is at the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival on June 11-12, at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles. This is a project from the heart that my friend Fanshen Cox and I created in 2008. We are going on our fourth year and this Festival promises to be the best yet. Check out the amazing line-up including the LA Premiere of Yelling to the Sky starring Zoe Kravitz, and readings by Danzy Senna, and Susan Straight among others. When I visited a classroom recently to talk about the Festival, the comments of middle-school kids confirmed for me that we need this Festival. In response to the writing prompt: "I think of my roots when . . ." A 10-year-old boy who is Trinidadian, Italian, and Danish-American wrote: "I think about my roots all the time because in 2nd grade one kid said to me: 'Why are you black?" so that scared me, so when I am with my friends I think: 'Do I fit in here?'" Thanks to so many of you who have donated we have been able to raise enough money to cover the Festival expenses this year. If you haven't donated yet to this all-volunteer and non-profit effort, there's still time. We'd love to start planning for 2012 with more than a zero balance as we have in past years. We all are someone, know someone or love someone in the Mixed experience. Please consider donating any amount on-line here. |
