Just look at the Middle East and their social changes, or the way in which Japan is using it to save lives and you can't help but be inspired by the power of social media. Google's "Person Finder" app is linking victims with family with over 7,000 records entered on the site within a few hours of the quake. While mainstream media struggles to get reporters on location, Twitter and YouTube are instantly communicating from the inside out and collaborating at all levels.

Alexander Chemev, Associate Professor of Marketing at Northwestern, says that consumers derive "additional utility or value" in doing something for themselves. From your morning cup of java to your Harley Davidson, you can have it just the way you like it!

 

In the past, manufacturing has accommodated differences but as preferences have grown to a highly fragmented level, they have been passed onto the consumer.
