Governor Ed Rendell has signed a stopgap budget into law, which will allow thousands of state employees to receive paychecks again. The temporary budget, however, does not include funding for public schools, because the amount of funding they will receive is yet undecided. At the heart of the budget crisis is a proposed personal income tax hike, to be used in part for added funding to school districts. Top Democratic and Republican legislators are scheduled to meet with Rendell to resolve the budget once and for all.

| Back-to-School Time |

August signals the end of summer, and that means getting ready to start off the school year strong. Preparing complete resources for students before they settle in to school can help maintain quicker access to records, contacts, and resources; smoother learning; and higher achievements. The Back to School season also means ensuring students have the proper classroom supplies to learn, participate, and achieve. Here are a few simple ways to prepare for the start of the school year:
- Hold a charity drive to collect school supplies for incoming students. Collect things like backpacks, pencils, notebooks, calculators and rulers as well as clothing, shoes, and non-perishable food items to be sure every student has the opportunity to start the school year nourished in body and mind. A well-stocked backpack can be the key to feeling ready to learn.
- Organize a summer activity to bring students together for something fun and educational, like a kickball game to build teamwork or a visit to a museum. This way, students can get to know CIS leaders and feel comfortable with them during the school year.
- Organize a follow-up activity to occur when school has begun, to include a wider audience and get all students prepared and excited to learn.
- Be sure your office is ready with an updated list of contacts from both within and outside the school district, and anticipate persons of interest who may need to be on hand at the start of the school year.
