Pathogens Project Initiated
A contract initiating FSA's research project to develop alternatives to fecal coliform bacteria for use as indicators of human pathogens has been been signed. The project is a joint effort between FSA Educational Foundation, FDEP and the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF.) Principal Investigator for the project will be Valerie "Jodi" Harword, an Associate Professor of microbiology at the University of South Florida and member of the FSAEF Research Advisory Council. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 30 months and will cost $430,000.
Developing alternatives to fecal coliform identification has been recommended by US EPA for years but research for previous alternatives had been completed in temperate environenments, whose results were of questionable applicability in Florida. Developing alternatives is also important if Florida is to be successful in updating its Designated Use and Waterbody Classification system.
FSAEF has pledged to raise $110,000 toward the project and has already received commitments for $30,000. For more information, contact Kurt Spitzer at 888/221-3124. |
