Electrical Industry News Help U.S. DoE with Proposed Energy Saving Protocols Have a spare minute to help the U.S. Department of Energy understand how to save some REAL energy? Until July 27, the DoE is accepting public comment new energy savings guidelines that focus on the usual subjects: lighting and controls, HVAC, boilers and furnaces. Now, imagine a 3,000 kVA transformer lit at night by a 300W quartz security luminaire. DoE guidelines say replace the quartz light with a solid state LED light to save energy. But it would take 30 years for the LED retrofit to achieve the same 30,000 kWH reduction in electricity that a PEARL member saves by reconditioning that 3000kVA transformer.
